Lorena Garcia making broader name via Taco Bell

Many consumers may be excused if they can't keep up with "the next big ... " whatever the Food Network or Bravo come up with.

Which means the prominence of chef Lorena Garcia in Taco Bell's commercials may not click with people who like Mexican/TexMex/Southwest food but don't watch Telemundo. After all, that's not her bailiwick.

Garcia actually is a native of Argentina who made her name on Spanish-language programs and guest spots on various cooking channels before being brought to the American audience last year to front Taco Bell's Cantina Bell menu push.

Her latest offering that hit the fast-food market this week is the Cantina Bell Steak Burrito, featuring upgraded braised meat.

She also has changed the marinade used for the chain's steak dishes, as well as the cut of meat, which also will be debuting at the various Taco Bell venues this week. Her new salsa will be unveiled this summer as a side-dish option and as part of such new dishes as the Double Steak Quesadilla being test-marketed in North Carolina.

The new Steak Burrito carries a suggested retail price of $4.99, featuring the new meat, Latin rice, black beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, roasted corn and pepper salsa, romaine lettuce and a creamy cilantro dressing, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.
