LHP Wandy Rodriguez likely to stay put with Astros over course of 2012 season

HOUSTON -- Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow stated on Wednesday that lefty Wandy Rodriguez has strong value to the ballclub and factors into the organization's plans for the 2012 season.

The 32-year-old Rodriguez posted an 11-11 record with a 3.49 ERA over 191 innings in 30 starts for the Astros last season.

He's been the subject of trade rumors this offseason.

However, the Astros have never gotten close to working out a deal with other clubs, especially since Houston isn't willing to absorb much of the $25.5 million that remains on Rodriguez's contract.

Luhnow gave Rodriguez a strong vote of confidence.

"Wandy's got value to us," Luhnow said. "There's no question about it. Right now, I look at our roster, and he's an important piece of it. There's no reason to think about this team without him. He's not only been an Astro, but he knows the guys here. He knows the staff. He's going to win some ballgames for the club.

"At this point, he's definitely an important part of our plan."

With pitchers and catchers scheduled to work out for the first time in Kissimmee, Fla., on Feb. 20, right-hander Brett Myers, Rodriguez and Bud Norris are projected to be Houston's front three starters.
