The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) recently named Orlando (#1) and Las Vegas (#2) as the top two most popular US summer travel destinations. These two cities have dominated this ranking source for the previous twelve successive years. ASTA agents refer to both locations as affordable, family-friendly, and fun. Data for this ranking hinges on actual bookings by ASTA travel agents.

The top ten 2014 ASTA domestic summer travel destinations were...

  1. Orlando
  2. Las Vegas
  3. Miami
  4. San Francisco
  5. Los Angeles
  6. New York City
  7. San Diego
  8. Honolulu
  9. Washington DC
  10. New Orleans

Ten years ago, the top ten ten summer destinations represented 75% of all travel agent bookings across all destinations according to ASTA. Currently, the top ten represent 51% of all destinations booked by ASTA agents. Summer travelers have booked travel to more than 100 destinations for summer 2014, reflecting a consumer trend for more unique vacation experiences domestically.

The dominance of Orlando and Las Vegas as the most popular domestic summer destinations has decreased 28% and 13%, respectively, as a percentage of total market share between 2007 and 2014. These declines further support consumer trends for more varied and unique summer travel destinations.
