The potential list of 2014 NBA free agents could be full of All-Star talent with Carmelo Anthony rumored to be one player the Los Angeles Lakers may target. Although there's still a lot of time between now and when NBA free agency begins in July, Anthony opting out of his deal with the New York Knicks is possible, but signing with the Lakers might be unlikely according to Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk on Feb. 11:
The Lakers idea isn’t happening, they are lukewarm on adding him next to Kobe Bryant; and while the Bulls idea is more interesting on paper it is far from likely. After that, well, he is not going anywhere else to a non-major market.
At this point in time, the Lakers appear to be headed toward locking up a high draft pick in the upcoming 2014 NBA Draft. The team has been riddled with injuries this season and unable to get back on track with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Nick Young on the shelf, the storied franchise will be forced to use different tactics to rebuild.
Despite being forced to build through the draft, the Lakers will have a considerable amount of cap space at their disposal this summer. It remains uncertain at this point which players will be ultimately become free agents come July, but along with Anthony a few other big names could also decide to test the free agent waters.
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Kyle Lowry, Luol Deng and Pau Gasol may all be unrestricted this summer. Lance Stephenson is another player the Lakers may also pursue, but everything is up in the air with anything possible from here on out.
