Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner spotlighted her fit bikini body in an Instagram selfie she posted just hours after her daughter, Kim, posted her own bikini photo.
Kris, 58, and Kim have more in common than their exhibitionist personalities: Both credit low-carb diets for their stunning physiques: Kardashian follows a low-carb ketogenic-style Atkins diet, while Jenner follows a low carb Mediterranean-style diet.
Jenner, a mom of six, is in great shape, thanks to a low carb diet she follows on the advice of her nutritionist, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito.
DiSpirito has been Jenner's weight loss coach since July 2013. "I send food to California for her every day and she follows my diet," said DiSpirito, who put Jenner on the eating plan he detailed in his book, The Pound a Day Diet.
DiSpirito, a youthful-looking 47, has maintained his own 50-pound weight loss for the past few years, on his "Pound a Day Diet," which he said will help you lose a pound a day without plateaus. The 6-foot-1 DiSpirito slimmed down from 230 pounds to 180 pounds, and now boasts an impressive 10 percent body fat.
In Phase One, dieters consume six low-carb, protein-rich meals totaling 850 calories on weekdays and 1,200 calories on the weekends. The following week, you consume more calories, but every week the diet changes, so your body never gets used to it, helping you avoid the inevitable weight-loss plateaus that frustrate so many people.
'Only Liposuction Delivers Faster Results'
Some nutritionists have criticized Rocco's diet as a quick fix, but he said his plan works because it delivers fast results, which fuels motivation to stick with the diet.
"The 'Pound a Day Diet' is as high-velocity as a weight-loss program can get," said DiSpirito, who also wrote the bestselling Now Eat This! Diet. "Only liposuction provides faster results. I did the research. I know it works because I personally tested it on over three dozen people."
In addition to following Rocco's "Pound a Day" diet, Jenner also works out a lot, doing cardio exercise and strength training. "I try to work out as much as possible and eat right," she said.
Keto Diet Reverses Diabetes, Fights Depression and Cancer
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian is fitter than ever after losing 56 pounds in six months on a low-carb ketogenic-style diet that limited her daily carb intake to less than 60 grams. Kim looks fantastic, but more importantly, said she feels better than ever on her low-carb diet.
While the ketogenic diet has made headlines for its capacity to produce rapid weight loss, it is also hailed for combating epilepsy, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Studies also suggest the ketogenic diet can curb depression and bipolar disorder. This isn't surprising to Dr. Jeff Volek, a professor at the University of Connecticut.
Volek, author of The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living, told me the ketogenic diet can produce optimal health, for both elite endurance athletes and the average sedentary individual.
"There are very few people that a ketogenic diet could not help," he said. "Carbohydrate restriction is the proverbial ‘silver bullet’ for managing insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes."
With new reports confirming that unprocessed saturated fat is good for you, Volek is confident more people will embrace the LCHF lifestyle and take control of their health through diet.
"It's an exciting time," said Dr. Volek, who also wrote New Atkins For a New You. "There's a lot of momentum. I think the pendulum is swinging in the right direction."
