What we do with our free time gives shape, texture and meaning to our lives. Knitting fell out of popular past time in the second half of the twentieth century, but now the domestic art of yesteryear is making a comeback. Knitting is now officially cool, even Hollywood celebrities, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, do it in their spare time.
Making things slowly and carefully by hand takes us to a kinder, gentler place. Our passion for the handmade is stronger than ever, more than 7 million, under the age of thirty-five, both men and women.
You see them in their Ralph Lauren jackets and Prada shoes, kintting up a storm at Starbucks and scores of groups and websites. Hip new knitting shops are popping up all across the states, sellingglamorous yarns, faux fur, tinseled and cashmere, once only available to top fashion designers.
People are joining knitting circles, where they build friendships and connect with others, taking time to appreciate life and nourish the soul.
Knitting by nature is Slow and immensely calming. It is so slow that you see the beauty in every tiny assembly that makes up a sweater. So slow, we know we are not going to finish it today or tomorrow, next week or in a few months. We can not push a bitton to speed up the process, we can not buy ten more in an instant.
Knitwear and funky scarves will always be on the cover of Vogue.
