Kidpower to offer workshops for kids and teens with developmental disabilities

Kidpower and Teenpower will offer FREE safety and confidence-building workshops for kids and teens with developmental disabilities in October at Children's Hospital. These groups teach self-protection and communication skills to use at home, at school, at work, and online. The sessions are hands-on and designed to reduce fear and build confidence. A parent or caregiver must attend both groups, and the child or teen attends only the second group. Details are below:

Kidpower for 8 to 12 year-olds

  • Week 1: Wednesday, 10/5/11 - Parents/Caregivers Only
  • Week 2: Wednesday, 10/19/11 - Parent/Caregiver - Child Workshop

Teenpower for 13 to 18 year-olds

  • Week 1: Wednesday, 11/2/11 - Parents/Caregivers Only
  • Week 2: Wednesday, 11/16/11 - Parent/Caregiver - Teen Workshop

  • All groups meet 4:15-6:15 pm at Children's Hospital in Oakland.

These workshops are offered through a collaboration between The Center for Child Protection at Oakland's Children's Hospital and Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower, International, a non-profit organization that teaches people of all ages and abilities the skills to stay safe, act wisely and believe in themselves. Kidpower is a non-profit leader in bullying prevention, child abuse prevention, stranger awareness, and personal safety for children, teens, and adults.

Workshops are free thanks to a grant from The California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA).

John Luna-Sparks, LCSW, is a Certified Instructor and Senior Program Leader with Kidpower and a staff psychotherapist with the Center for Child Protection at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland.
