As former "X Factor" U.S. host Khloe Kardashian and her husband, basketball star Lamar Odom, continue to deal with allegations that he cheated on her and that they are headed for divorce, now comes news that one of their biggest marital problems is Odom's drug addiction.
Kardashian (who is 29) and Odom (who is 33) have been married since 2009, but their busy careers have often kept them apart, and tabloids have constantly reported that the couple is getting divorced. (Kardashian has repeatedly denied these rumors.)
According to a TMZ report that was published on Aug. 23, 2013, Odom has been to rehab for his drug addiction, but he is currently not clean and sober. TMZ did not specify which drug or drugs that Odom is addicted to, but the NBA suspended him twice in 2001 (first in May and then in November of that year) for drug-related violations. The NBA and its teams do not publicly disclose which drug or drugs are involved when NBA players are suspended for a drug-related violation. However, Odom later admitted to the media that his drug violations were for marijuana, and he made a public apology for his illegal drug use.
TMZ reports: "Lamar has had a problem for two years. It got so bad, last August Khloe pressured Lamar to go to rehab. Lamar went to a facility in San Diego, but he was so resistant Khloe hired private investigators to secretly stand guard at the rehab place to make sure he didn't leave. The P.I.s stood guard 24/7. Our sources say Lamar constantly threatened to leave and Khloe made several visits to prevail upon him to stay. We're told after three weeks, Lamar left for good. We're told Lamar actually stayed clean once he left rehab and was able to play well for the Clippers this past season. But when the season was over, sources say Lamar slipped deep back into hardcore recreational drugs.
"As for reports that Lamar was cheating recently, we're told Khloe is convinced it happened, and she feels she's been hit with a double whammy ... but drugs are the main problem. As for divorce ... neither Khloe nor Lamar has contacted a lawyer ... We're told the situation has become dire. Sources tell us ... within the last two days, the entire family staged an intervention, trying to convince Lamar to go back to rehab, but he wouldn't have any of it. In fact, on Wednesday morning [Aug. 21, 2013], right after the failed intervention, Khloe threw Lamar out of the house ..."
TMZ published a photo of Odom moving some of his possessions out of the house that he shares with Kardashian.
A source told TMZ: "Khloe is more concerned about saving Lamar than ending her marriage."
One of the women whom Odom allegedly had an adulterous affair with is attorney Polina Polonsky, who went to a tabloid to claim that she was Odom's mistress. On Aug, 14, 2013, the Huffington Post reported that a source told the Huffington Post that Odom and Kardashian will not be divorcing.
According to the Huffington Post: "Polina Polonsky is a California lawyer who, according to RadarOnline, has passed a lie detector regarding her claims that she had a six-week affair with Odom. Polonsky says the affair started on June 2, the night of Kim Kardashian's baby shower, which also happens to be the last time Khloe and Lamar were photographed together. Polonsky says she was under the impression that Odom's marriage to Kardashian was over by the time she became involved with him, when they hooked up at the Roosevelt Hotel, where he was staying around June 9."
Kardashian and Odom have not commented on Polonsky's allegations or the reports that Odom is a drug addict.
However, Kardashian's mother/manager, Kris Jenner, told TMZ: "Khloe and Lamar are absolutely not getting divorced. There's been no talk of divorce."
As previously reported, on July 10, 2013, tabloids Star magazine and Radar Online (which are both owned by American Media Inc.) reported that Odom had been cheating on Kardashian for a year with a 29-year-old stripper named Jennifer Richardson. And when Kardashian found out about the alleged affair earlier this year, the spouses began sleeping in separate rooms.
An unnamed source told Radar Online: “Things have been very, very tense in the house for a great deal of time. Khloe kicked Lamar out of their bedroom several months ago and he was sleeping in one of the mansion’s guest rooms. She fears Lamar has been cheating on her with various women. It really irked Khloe when Lamar was blatantly caught going to a strip joint.”
On July 10, 2013, Odom lashed out at paparazzi who had been following him in the Los Angeles area and questioning Odom about his marital situation. According to several reports and video footage taken of the incident, Odom smashed a photographer's camera equipment and car with a metal bar. Kardashian then addressed the situation by tweeting after Odom's run-in with the paparazzi: "F*ck the papz!!!!! You f*cking losers!!!!! But shout out to my hubby for posing with the fans! I love my Lam!" When asked on Twitter about her alleged marital problems and possible divorce, Kardashian responded, “Hehehe, I just love my hubby.”
Khloe Kardashian is not having a very good 2013. She was fired from "The X Factor" U.S. after getting an avalanche of complaints from viewers, who said she was a horrible and unprofessional host. Mario Lopez, who began co-hosting "The X Factor" U.S. with Kardashian in October 2012, will continue to host the show.
Khloe's bad year also included her older sister Kim getting a huge amount of publicity for being pregnant with Kanye West's first child and giving birth to a daughter named North. Even though Khloe insisted in interviews that she was very happy for Kim, Khloe has had well-publicized infertility issues and has been desperate to get pregnant, which would make it difficult for Khloe to not feel even a tiny bit jealous that her older sisters Kim and Kourtney have become mothers before she has and that their pregnancies have gotten so much media coverage.
Odom has two children — Destiny (born in 1998) and Lamar Jr. (born in 2002) — with his ex-girlfriend Liza Morales, who has been in an ongoing legal battle with him over child support. The former couple also had a son named Jaden, who was born in 2005, and passed away in 2006 of sudden infant death syndrome.
Khloe was tainted by a charity scandal involving Odom when it was revealed by ESPN in March 2013 that Cathy's Kids, a charity founded in 2005 by Odom for cancer research, had not given any of the approximately $2.2 million it had raised over the years to cancer research, and instead used some of its money to "to finance two elite youth basketball travel teams." Although Khloe did not found Cathy's Kids, she and Odom used their fame to raise money for the organization. In a statement, the couple denied any wrongdoing about Cathy's Kids.
As much as the Kardashians expose their lives on their reality TV shows, they have chosen not to expose Khloe's serious marital problems and alleged separation on their reality shows.
Aug. 25, 2013 update: TMZ reported that Odom has been missing for the past three days, and his family thinks he's on a crack-cocaine binge, but a source close to Odom denied to the Huffington Post that Odom is missing. TMZ later posted this update to the story: "We spoke to a rep for Lamar who says Lamar is fine, however he would not say anything about his whereabouts." According to TMZ, Odom has been addicted to crack cocaine for at least two years.
Khloe Kardashian has tweeted this comment in an apparent response to the news stories about her marriage: "Really hard to sit here and listen to people talk sh*t about my family! F*ck you and shame on you! I'm too protective for this sh*t!"
This vulgar statement does not confirm or deny that Odom is a drug addict and unfaithful husband. However, most people on the Internet have reacted with disgust at Khloe's statement, with the general consensus being that the Kardashian/Jenner family is hypocritical for wanting to be rich and famous for putting the family's personal lives on TV and having no talent, and yet the Kardashians/Jenners complain if the media and other people expose unflattering things about their personal lives. In other words, people are turned off when Khloe Kardashian tries to act like a dignified martyr who's a private person, when she does things like goes on TV and discusses her sex life and sniffs her sisters' panties.
Here's a sampling of reactions to Khloe Kardashian's profanity-filled tweet:
"I love these people that wish for, work for, cry for, get in everyone face for attention...Then when things go bad... That want the public to go away while they work through tough times..."
"Khloe didn't even get "fame" on her own. She got it because of her sister's sex tape. How lame is that?"
"They put themselves in the public eye....And then get annoyed when people gossip about them....."
"You don't seem to care about people talking #$%$ and your family when you are headed to the bank, buying new cars and vacationing in Greece! Pick your poison Khloe! You DID sign up for this..literally."
"The first indication that Lamar Odom had a drug problem was when he married a Kardashian."
"I would be struggling with substance abuse also if i had to deal with that family."
"Khloe, you can't expect to be taken seriously when you're sniffing your sisters panties on television, and judging the stench."
"The Kartrashians want to be known for doing NOTHING, and here they are again doing nothing. This is the most pathetic and dysfunctional family ever."
"Seriously, I saw a part of their show with Khloe talking to Lamar...the woman talks baby talk to him...I can't think of too many men who would want their wife to constantly (or even occasionally ) talk baby talk to them....I literally almost gagged it was so disgusting...she's a grown woman."
"Who are they kidding? I hope he implemented a solid prenup...you know those Kardashians will take him for everything he has!"
"'It's really hard to sit here and listen to people talk about my family'....??? Did she really tweet that? ...Buy it's ok to profit millions with no talents by doing reality shows where revealing intimate parts of family details are projected into strangers living rooms? Could they really believe that they were special enough for the masses not to turn on them?.....The fifteen minutes is up kids, better buckle your seat belts, here's where the crowd turns.... Careful what you wish for..."
"The Kardashians must only want the 'scripted' part of their lives to be exposed for the entire world to see. However, like most things in life, this success has a dark side and that is every aspect of your life will be potentially a headline for the celebrity news. And this should not come as a surprise to any member of this family. Lamar knew the media circus he was marrying into, he had to have realized that when there were the inevitable 'bumps' in his career, it would be scrutinized at length. And that anything negatively affecting his marriage would also being plastered in every pop culture website. Unfortunately, he obviously has fallen deeply into the abyss of addiction ... and hopefully during his fall, he will hit his bottom and find the determination to climb his way back to a clean life and learn to appreciate all the good things he has to be grateful for."
"Kardashian has the nerve to be angry that people are talking abut her family. When she opens her life in a supposed reality show, what does she expect? It is exhausting to hear about spoiled rotten K's making their money from doing nothing but pretending to be genuine, and then crying "victim" when the public reacts with judgement. Ya got enough cash to last a lifetime dear, but have you had enough of exposing yourself? Turn away from the camera and do some good with your life."
"Like Lindsay Lohan, it sounds like Odom will do it his way until his way no longer works. For the sake of his loving family, I hope he gets it before its too lat; and as long as he's breathing there's always hope, but Khloe needs her own help before she's destroyed in the process."
"Sorry Khloe, but I predicted years ago when Lamar got involved with You, and subsequently the circus known as the Kardashians, this would be the end result... Lamar in a downward spiral. Kobe 'used' to consider him a friend, hopefully, now he puts forth the effort to help save his 'friend' from himself. Good Luck Lamar !"
"I know how you can avoid the spotlight, khloe....get out of it. Or expect people to talk about your dysfunctional family."
Aug. 27, 2013 update: In an interview with ESPN.com, Odom's agent Jeff Schwartz denied that Odom is missing, but admitted that Odom is battling a drug problem; he declined to say what drug(s). Schwartz commented: "His wife knows exactly where he is ... Playing in the NBA is still very much part of Lamar’s plans.”
Meanwhile, Radar Online reported that OxyContin, not cocaine, is Odom's main drug of choice. An unnamed source told Radar Online: “Lamar was able to smoke OxyContin and it was detected during several drug tests. But because he had a valid prescription, it wasn’t a violation. It allowed him to skate through the system. He knew he could smoke it and get away with it."
An NBA source added, “If Lamar had been using crack cocaine, or any other illegal drug, it would have been detected during the league’s drug testing routine.”
Sergeant Denise Joslin released this statement to Us Weekly: "Today at roughly 3:25 a.m., our officers observed a white Mercedes SUV driving eastbound on the 101 freeway approaching Sepulveda. Our officer observed it weaving in traffic lanes at a slow speed. We conducted an enforcement stop. The driver continued eastbound to Coldwater Canyon Blvd; he came to a stop just south of the freeway, [in] the Sherman Oaks area, and was identified as Lamar Odom.
"He showed objective signs of intoxication, was unable to perform field sobriety tests, and he was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to LAPD's Van Nuys facility and he was booked there at 5:01 a.m. He refused to take a chemical test. In his case, since he was a refusal, generally that involves some longer holding times. Also, his detention at the facility will be dependent on if he has any other warrants."
Sept. 10, 2013: Paparazzi from TMZ and Splash News caught up with Odom as he was leaving the restaurant Teru Sushi in Studio City, Calif., on Sept. 9, 2013. When Odom was asked if he has a drug problem, he said, "No." When asked if he needed professional help, he also replied, "No."
Odom, who was dropped from the Los Angeles Clippers and is now a free agent, had this to say when one of the paparazzi asked him which team he wanted to play for next: "Anybody that's a fan." He added, "Life is good."
Odom frequently smiled for the cameras, and he laughed when one of the paparazzi asked him if Odom had talked to Khloe. "That's my wife! Of course!" Odom replied.
