Kern County Airport in Bakersfield, Calif., gears up for international trade

A foreign trade zone that reaches beyond Meadows Field, Kern County’s commercial airport, west of Bakersfield, is generating hundreds of private sector jobs and encouraging the region’s economic development, according to Jack Gotcher, the county’s airports director.

In the current edition of the Kern Business Journal, Gotcher explains how the foreign trade zone and related U.S. Customs services are enhancing the development of logistics centers, such as those in Shafter and at the Tejon Ranch Commercial Center, south of Bakersfield.

The foreign trade zone, combined with airport facilities, such as “runways that are able to handle all aircraft flying today,” have placed Meadows Field at the heart of the region’s travel and logistics network, according to Gotcher.
