Extremely positive reactions to Clarkson’s stirring performance hit Twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets immediately – as fast as social media responded to Aretha Franklin’s hat four years ago when Franklin donned an unusual choice of headgear for Obama’s first inauguration as she sang the song for Obama in 2009.
Clarkson has been on the American music scene since winning first place on the “American Idol” television competition in 2002.
Besides Clarkson performance, James Taylor sang “America the Beautiful” (lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates and music by Samuel A. Ward) accompanied by Taylor's own guitar in his unique laid-back style, and Beyonce Knowles flawlessly performed “The National Anthem” (lyrics by Francis Scott Key). UPDATE: Beyonce was lip synching at the Inauguration ceremony.
Clarkson and Beyonce were accompanied by the United States Marine Band.
Additionally, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir of New York sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” (lyrics by Julia Ward Howe) during the festivities in the nation’s capitol.
