Irish modern hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty, better known as The Getty's, brought a festive St. Patrick's Day evening to Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Mar. 17, 2013, along with special guests including Contemporary Celtic band RUNA, the Nashville Irish Stepdancers, and Irish Christian experimental, folk rock, worship band Rend Collective Experiment. To the delight of the audience, a special surprise guest popped up on stage as country musician Ricky Skaggs joined the festivities.
The Gettys performed selections from their latest project, "Hymns for the Christian Life" while RUNA and Rend Collective Experiment brought the sounds of Ireland to the stage.
"In the Church, the purpose of singing is to express the community we have as the Body of Christ." Kristyn Getty said in a 2007 interview. "To try and search for the melodic ideas and song structure that might bring more people in, that's what we're trying to investigate. Is there a way to bring everyone together musically?"
Based upon the reaction from the audience on Mar. 17 at the Ryman, the Getty's have achieved their goal as traditional Celtic music met Irish folk rock, American bluegrass and universal hymns.
The Gettys appeared at a reception for industry guests including fellow artist Andrew Peterson during intermission at the St. Patrick's Day show.
