Kate Hudson is in the best shape of her life at 34, thanks to a portion-controlled diet and daily workouts. Hudson, who lost 70 pounds after giving birth to her second son, Bing, in July 2011, works out not only to exercise her body, but to center her mind.
“I work out to feel great but also to look great,” Hudson told Shape. “There’s no way a woman gets up to work out at 6:30 a.m. just for the mood boost. She wants to fit into her jeans and look fantastic too.”
Judging by her flat abs and toned physique, it's hard to tell that Kate tipped the scales at 184 pounds two years ago.
She lost the baby weight by working out up to six hours a day, because she preferred to exercise more rather than follow a restrictive diet.
Hudson now maintains her stunning bikini body by eating 1,800 calories a day (1,500 when she's trying to drop a few pounds). She does an elimination diet or juice cleanse twice a year.
While Kate doesn't believe in depriving herself, she stays vigilant about portion size and calories because it's easy to gain weight when you don't track either.
I remember a few years ago I needed to lose some weight but just couldn’t drop these 15 pounds. My diet was a lot of raw foods and I thought, ‘Why am I so bloated?’ Turns out I was eating about 3,500 calories a day because I was constantly snacking on cashews! I don’t care how many people say it’s a 'good fat,' that really got me.”
Hudson recently launched her own workout clothing line called Fabletics. “I really see it as more of a lifestyle brand,” she said. “You can work out in it, then go have coffee with your girlfriends, then pick up the kids from school. The line is casual, chic, and very affordable — and there’s something for every body type.”
Kate, a longtime workout fanatic, stays in shape by doing Pilates, yoga, running and jumping rope (which supermodel Adriana Lima also does). She enjoys the calorie-burning cardio workout because it's so convenient.
“My new thing is that I always carry a jump rope with me," she said. "Whenever I have a break during the day, I’ll just jump. I can either sit around looking at my phone or I can jump!"
