Emma Brown of the Washington Post and the D.C. Public Charter School Board are reporting that Jesus Aguirre, the Director of Parks and Recreation, has been named by Mayor Gray as the new State Superintendent of Education. Prior to his position at Parks and Recreation, Mr. Aguirre was the Director of School Operations for DCPS. During this period among his responsibilities was responsibility for the system's enrollment process, a tremendously demanding task.
His biography on the Department of Parks and Recreation website states that before Mr. Aguirre came to DCPS he co-founded and ran one of the early charter schools in Phoenix, Arizona that served low income children. In the past he was also a middle school science teacher in Los Angeles.
I have met Mr. Aguirre and he appears to be an extremely professional and reasonable individual.
He replaces Hosanna Mahaley Jones who resigned last July to be with her husband who had a heart attack.
