On Monday, I blogged about a Jersey City gun "buyback" on The War on Guns: Notes from the Resistance—my focus was on the ignorant cop collecting guns who was photographed with his finger curled on the trigger. At the time, the “buyback” proprietors did not release a number of guns collected, but did say it “exceeded expectations.”
Now we find out how high they set those expectations: They collected 65 guns. None, of course, from criminals, unless somebody wanted to take advantage of the “No Questions Asked” policy and either cash in on a stolen gun or else dispose of violent crime evidence.
The hoplophobic hyperbole in the follow up report abounds:
The number might not be large but includes some particularly dangerous firearms, officials said.
“The devastation this gun could add to any street corner is truly catastrophic,” Police Chief Tom Comey said yesterday while holding up a machine gun pistol he referred to as a “street sweeper.”
The chief said the gun, a MAC 10, has a 30-round magazine that can be expended in 10 seconds and it can also be modified to fire in fully automatic mode.
Assuming he doesn’t know and is just throwing out terms to gin up hysteria, take note: This is a “Streetsweeper.” It’s a shotgun. I’ll give the “Authorized Journalist” boob parroting the propaganda the benefit of the doubt and assume he doesn’t know that a semi-automatic variant of a MAC-10 is not a “machine gun pistol”—and what a shameful reflection on his profession that he doesn’t, and just blindly repeats the crap he’s been fed by an agenda-driven tax-feeder. And as far as modifying it to full auto, y’know, if you are a competent gunsmith with the parts and the training and the inclination to commit federal felonies, hell, I know guys with the technical skills to convert a damned banana to full auto. That doesn’t mean you can readily swap out parts in your garage and have a machine gun—if you could, ATF would shut whatever model you could do that to down under the National Firearms Act (NFA), 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b), which defines the term “machinegun” as:
… any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. [Emphasis added]
I’ve run into this Comey character before—he’s the one who said pump action shotguns were “assault weapons,” so I guess it’s no surprise that now he’s telling us that semiauto MAC-10 variants are “street sweepers.” And I also note he’s getting press for this "buyback" with Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healey, another of Bloomberg’s criminal Mayors Against Guns who obstructed justice, resisted arrest, was nude and drinking on his porch, engaged in disorderly conduct...
Yeah, these are the Only Ones in Jersey City, that cesspoo...uh...flower of civic ethics, who can be trusted with guns. No wonder they have to resort to lies.
