Today, the Department of Defense announced the death of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier who was just one week shy of his 21st birthday.
Pfc. Markie T. Sims, 20, of Citra, Fla., died Dec. 29, 2012, in Panjwal, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Pfc. Sims was assigned to the 38th Engineer Company, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, under control of the 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, (Tacoma) Wash. His unit has lost three soldiers during this deployment.
This was the first deployment for Pfc. Sims. He was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to the News Tribune.com via The Star-Banner, Pfc. Sims' wife, Shakeli, is pregnant with their first child.
No funeral arrangements have been released by the family.
