An interview with Jason Mraz is featured in the
September issue of Richmond Magazine
Jason Mraz recently told Richmond Magazine how he decided to write one of his most personal songs, "Love for a Child." The song describes the experience of being a child of divorce. Mraz's parents divorced when he was eight years old.
"It's kinda nice to work the floor since the divorce
I've been enjoying both my Christmases and my birthday cakes
And taking drugs and making love at far too young an age
And they never checked to see my grades
What a fool I'd be to start complaining now"
32-year-old Mraz says he wrote the song in London in 2007 when he was working on his latest album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.
“It was just something that had been brewing inside of me that needed to come out," Mraz explains. "A way to acknowledge my family, that yeah, things happen and things might happen to an eight-year-old."
While the song could be interpreted to have left Mraz feeling negative about the whole situation, especially with the following lyrics:
"When you're young, it's okay to be easily ignored
I'd like to believe it was all about love for a child"
Mraz says "this is a love song... really when I look back at my life, I was loved through and through and through. So it was a really powerful song for me and to share it with them too ."
Mraz often dedicates the song to his mother before singing it in concert. Watch a live performance of "Love for a Child" below:
