James Clyburn: Palin intellectually unable to understand issue of rhetoric

Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC) attacked Sarah Palin Wednesday over her use of the term "blood libel" in a statement she issued earlier in the day.

Echoing one of the standard attack lines used by the left, he told liberal talker Bill Press that Palin was intellectually unable to understand the situation, according to The Hill:

"You know, Sarah Palin just can't seem to get it, on any front. I think she's an attractive person, she is articulate," Clyburn said on the Bill Press radio show. "But I think intellectually, she seems not to be able to understand what's going on here."

Clyburn said Palin didn't understand how "rhetoric" could impact people, no matter what motivated the alleged shooter.

"I have some experiences that maybe she does not have," he said. "When I see and hear things today that are reminiscent of that period of time, I am very, very concerned about it, because I know what it led to back then, and I know what it can lead to again."

Actually, Palin - and many others - do understand how rhetoric can impact people.

The blood libel - and there is no other way to describe the horrendous smears propagated by liberal politicians and pundits - is exactly the same kind of rhetoric that eventually led to millions being killed and gassed simply for being Jewish.  Liberals may not like to hear it, but the historic record cannot be ignored.

Alan Dershowitz - hardly a conservative icon - defended her use of the term.  According to a post at Big Government, he said:

The term “blood libel” has taken on a broad metaphorical meaning in public discourse. Although its historical origins were in theologically based false accusations against the Jews and the Jewish People, its current usage is far broader. I myself have used it to describe false accusations against the State of Israel by the Goldstone Report. There is nothing improper and certainly nothing anti-Semitic in Sarah Palin using the term to characterize what she reasonably believes are false accusations that her words or images may have caused a mentally disturbed individual to kill and maim. The fact that two of the victims are Jewish is utterly irrelevant to the propriety of using this widely used term.

Thanks to the propaganda being pushed by the mainstream media, liberals issued death wishes on Twitter.

Odd, Clyburn apparently does not have a problem with that.

He also does not seem to have a problem with laying the tragic shooting of Congressman Giffords at the feet of millions of people who not only abhor such violence, but had absolutely no hand in it.

Instead of listening to the other eight minutes of Palin's message, he instead chose to focus on two words.

Let's face it - it would not matter what Palin said or did.  She could commit ritual suicide on live television and liberals like Clyburn and Press would find some reason to whine and moan about it.

The ones who need to tone down the rhetoric are those on the left who have a blind, almost pathological, hatred for Sarah Palin and conservatives in general.

Fortunately, Americans are not buying into the propaganda.

A poll released by Rasmussen Wednesday shows 58 percent do not believe politics had anything to do with the attack.  A similar poll at CBS News said 57 percent do not believe the media-generated hype that politics was involved.

Nevertheless, liberals like Clyburn will use the template to demand restrictions on free of speech and gun ownership.

Voters are not buying the lie.  Palin is right - the blood libel must stop.

Wow! Way to spin, Mr. Newby! Palin launches another violent phrase in light of discourse on violent rhetoric, and you blame the liberals and link them to the holocaust. Incredible. You, sir, are not intellectually capable of understanding this debate.

  • Bullmoose 1 year ago

And, you, sir, have just insulted our president, who emphatically declared tonight that there is NO connection between the tragic events and political rhetoric.

  • Joe Newby 1 year ago

Bullmoose, apparently you are incapable of reading the date and time of the article which is several hours older than the President's speech, and I wrote on that as well. And, would you mind explaining how it is I insulted someone I never mentioned? What part of fantasy-land are you in?

Would someone please stick some duct tape over Sarah's mouth so she can't get her foot in? Agree with me? http://upc.bz/0170

How ironic. In an article about those who "don't get it", you prescribe assaulting your opponents. That's sooooo typical.

  • Joe Newby 1 year ago

Again, bullmoose, what, exactly, do you consider "assaulting" my opponents? I see, disagreeing with a liberal is now "assault". So much for toning down rhetoric.

It's amazing how many times the world "liberal" was used in this awfully partisan article. This article itself is a perfect example of irresponsible journalism, thanks for putting more hatred out there in the world.

I know you aren't used to seeing the word used in most articles because the MSM almost never identifies liberals. But Bill Press and James Clyburn ARE liberals, and liberals are the ones engaging in hate. Are you ashamed of the word liberal? And I guess that pointing out Clyburn and Press are liberals is now "hate". What a joke.

Way to go Sarah by stoking the fire even more with an anti-semitic remark. Instead of smiling and nodding while talking about murders and national tragedies, try having some humility. I was compelled to create a visual commentary of her political rhetoric and its effects on my artist's blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/sarah-palin-made-me-do-it.html. Drop by and let me know what you think.

If she Sara Palin doesn't think what she's saying or doing is irresponsible then why were her people so quick to take the cross-hairs map off the web site so hastily?
Of course this guy is a nut case but how many more are out there? It's bad enough when they here voices in they're head telling them bad things. But what happens when those voices are real and broadcast over the media?
Everyone's waiting for him to say weather or not the cross-hairs made him do it. That answer may never come from him! But we are all afraid of what these influential politicians are saying and how they are saying it.
I think they’re afraid also, that's why the cross-hairs map was removed so quickly? Not so much because of the fear of more random people getting hurt or killed but because of the political consequences. The very next day a clear statement should have replaced the cross-hairs map with a heart felt sincere apology that if this was the cause of this tragedy I am truly sorry! Not that the shooting was not my fault! Doesn’t Mrs. Palin have a very young daughter also?

So are you willing to accuse President Obama of being "intellectually unable" to understand the debate? Regarding the use of the term "blood libel", how many people were even aware of the Jewish connotations of the term? If a prominent LIBERAL Jew such as Dershowitz says Palin used the term appropriately, how do non-Jewish posters have the audacity to say they know better?

  • Bullmoose 1 year ago

Evidently the President...whose speech was excellent...rebuked the haters who are so obsessed with Palin's every move that they will find any excuse to attack her. I wonder how much hand-wringing all of those who were called out by the President will do if, God forbid, someone attacks Palin, Bachman, Engle, etc.?

It's also interesting to learn that, according to liberal pundit E.J. Dionne, the shooter was "possibly deranged'. Possibly? POSSIBLY????? Also interesting to see that Sec. of State Clinton describes the shooter as "an extremist" .

It's ironic that elementary sex "education", violent video games, etc., have no bad effect on people, but that people who dare say that the present administration is less than perfect can have an effect on people who would never listen to them.

Do I dare suggest that this is inconsistent at best?
