An Italian parish priest has donated his used car, a Renault 4 with 186,000 miles on it, to the Holy Father after praying about how best to live out the Pope's call for clergy and the People of God to live more simply with an eye to the things of God, rather than the things of the world, Catholic News Agency reported Tuesday. Father Renzo Roca is pastor of St. Lucy parish in Pescantina in Italy. “When I gave it to him, we got into the car, but I didn’t have to explain anything to the Pope because he told me that he also used a Renault 4 in Argentina and that it never left him stranded,” Father Roca told Catholic News Agency.
The parish wanted to present a tee shirt to Pope Francis as a gift, and the shirts are often sold to raise money for activities at the parish, but the Pope insisted on paying, Father Roca said. The Holy Father is said to have expressed an interest in periodically driving himself to diocesan events in Rome. It is unknown if that desire will prove to be a practical one.
