The Beatles announced Sept. 12 they will release a new set of their BBC Radio recordings “On the Air: Live at the BBC, Vol. 2” Nov. 11. The new release will be available on 2 CDs with 63 tracks and 180-gram vinyl packages with a 48-page booklet.
None of the new set overlaps with The Beatles’ first BBC release, the original 1994 "Live at the BBC," which is being remastered and is also due out Nov. 11.
The new album, a double disc set, will have 63 tracks with 37 previously unreleased performances and 23 previously unreleased recordings of in-studio banter and conversation between the band’s members and their BBC radio hosts. The original 1994 BBC release featured 56 songs and 13 tracks of dialogue. Thirty of the songs had never been issued previously by The Beatles.
Ten of "On Air’s" songs were never recorded by the group for EMI in the 1960s, including two making their debuts with the new release: The Beatles’ direct-to-air performance of Chuck Berry’s “I’m Talking About You” and a cover of the standard “Beautiful Dreamer.” "On Air" also includes different versions of six rarities heard on the 1994 BBC collection: Little Richard’s “Lucille,” Chuck Berry’s “Memphis, Tennessee,” Chan Romero’s “The Hippy Hippy Shake,” Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman,” and two songs they learned from records by Carl Perkins, “Glad All Over” and “Sure To Fall.”
"On Air" also features BBC recordings of 30 songs from The Beatles’ catalogue, including "I Saw Her Standing There,” “Twist And Shout,” “Do You Want To Know A Secret,” “Boys,” “Please Mister Postman,” “Money,” “And I Love Her,” and “If I Fell.” It was compiled and researched by producers Kevin Howlett and Mike Heatley. The new album and its predecessor has been mastered by engineers Guy Massey and Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios. The booklets for both collections include Kevin Howlett’s essays on the history of The Beatles’ BBC radio sessions and his detailed commentaries on all of the tracks.
The new album will be issued in conjunction with a new book by Kevin Howlett, “The Beatles: The BBC Archives: 1962-1970,” which will include unseen BBC transcripts, historical documents and rare photos from the Beatles' TV and radio appearances. The book will be in U.S. stores Oct. 29. (It will also be available from Amazon.co.uk.)
According to the publisher, the book will include the surviving transcripts from the Beatles’ appearances on BBC radio and TV from 1962 to 1970 with commentary from Howlett and will hit stores the very same day as another much-awaited Beatles book, “Tune In,” the first volume of Mark Lewisohn's “All These Years” Beatles bio trilogy.
The cover, notably, has been revised from the rumored version to shorten George Harrison's tie.
