Is President Barack Obama a secret atheist? Richard Dawkins thinks so. Appearing on Real Time with Bill Maher the famed evolutionary biologist and staunch atheist said that he was “sure” President Obama was an atheist.
Maher spoke with Dawkins on the Friday, Oct. 26, edition of Real Time with Bill Maher.
When asked by Maher if he thought Pope Francis was an atheist, Dawkins said “Like many people, I’m sure Obama is an atheist, I’m sure Kennedy was an atheist, but I doubt if Pope Frank is.”
Dawkins went on to say that the fact this new Pope is “nice” is “dangerous,” because he still subscribes to the same religious system as previous Popes, just with a softer tone.
Maher and Dawkins also joked about the fact that many Americans continue to believe in Biblical creation, despite the overwhelming evidence in favor of biological evolution. Dawkins told Maher:
If you believe that the world is only 6000 years old, as some of these people do, given that the true age of the earth is 4.6 billion years, it’s equivalent to believing the width of North America is eight yards.
Dawkins is not the first to speculate about Obama being an atheist. Right wing diva Ann Coulter has called President Obama an atheist on more than one occasion. However, when Dawkins refers to Obama as an atheist, he means it as a compliment, whereas when conservatives like Coulter refer to Obama as an atheist, they mean it as an insult.
For the record, Obama claims to be a Christian. Indeed, Obama has self identified as a Christian for many years. For twenty years Obama was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, a Congregationalist denomination of mainstream Protestantism. Obama ended his church membership during the 2008 campaign after the public uproar and protest of inflammatory racial remarks made by the church pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
