Is Katy Perry the Grammys biggest loser?

LOS ANGELES - Katy Perry has performed for the Grammy Awards, MusiCares Person of the Year Concerts (a Grammy-related event), and for the Grammy Nominations Concert.  She has yet to win a Grammy.

She can't seem to break through the American Music Awards, either.  Her consolation prize was a special award given to her during the telecast in recognition for having 5 Number One singles from the same album - 'Teenage Dream.'  It's a feat few artists have even accomplished.

Her Grammy nominations are as follows according to www. Grammy.com:

  1. 2008 "I Kissed A Girl" - Best Pop Female Vocal Performance
  2. 2009 "Hot 'n' Cold" - Best Pop Female Vocal Performance
  3. 2010 "Teenage Dream" - Best Pop Female Vocal Performance
  4. 2010 'Teenage Dream' - Album of The Year,
  5. 2010 'Teenage Dream' - Record of the Year
  6. 2010 'California Gurls' (feat. Snoop Dogg) - Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals
  7. 2011 'Firework' - Record of the Year,
  8. 2011 'Firework' - Best Pop Vocal Performance

She won a Brit award from the British Recording Academy in 2009 for International Female Artist.  And she has won 8 People's Choice Awards according to www.PeoplesChoice.com as well as a few MTV astronauts.

In some ways it doesn't make sense that the Grammy eludes her.  Perry is a quintuple-platinum selling artist acording to  www.RIAA.com.  She swept the People's Choice Awards with 5 wins including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Music Video, Favorite Song of the Year, Favorite TV Guest Star and Favorite Tour Headliner.

Of course, it's hard to cry to hard for yourself when Adele, who won 6 2011 Grammys that night, beat you.  Katy was gracious, popping to her feet immediately with a smile to acknowledge Adele's acheivement.

8 Grammy losses might seem like a slap in the face to the fans who love her, but she's in the company of Avril Lavigne, Tori Amos, Jazmine Sullivan, NSYNC and Alice In Chains.  Justin Timberlake won 6 Grammys as a solo artist, but NSYNC tallyed an 8 loss streak.

Worthy as both singer and songwriter - not just a rapper - B.o.B. was nominated 5 times in 2010 for songs from 'The Adventures of Bobby Ray' and lost all of them.

There are other artists who have lost more than Perry has.  Nas has lost a total of 9 times.  Megadeth can't get any respect at 10 losses.  He might have been a Leader of the New School, but Busta Rhymes can't seem to bust out of his 11 Grammy losing streak.  Musiq Soulchild can score R&B hits, but isn't a hit at the Grammys, matching Vanessa Williams and Busta Rhymes.

Avril Lavigne would say her 8 Grammy losing streak is 'Complicated'.  The singer-songwriter can make headlines for bad behavior, produce her own record, and even become a fashion designer.  But she can't seem to win a Grammy.

Actress, singer, and beauty queen Vanessa Williams was nominated and lost all 11 times. 'Save the Best for Last' indeed!  Luckily she's still stunning and continues life as an actress on hit television shows.

Bjork is better at wearing bizarre swan outfits than she is at winning Grammys with 13 losses.

Perry's 'California Gurls' collaborator Snoop Dogg can get arrested for possession but can't seem to arrest a Grammy Award, having been nominated 14 times without a win.  Country singer Martina McBride also clocks in at 14 losses, but won a juicy spot at the upcoming Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA.

The biggest losers of all are Joe Satriani with 15 losses and the record holder, Brian McKnight, who has 16 total losses.

Jazz fusionists Spyro Gyra have been making recordings for almost 40 years, but they can't win a Grammy.  Their career total includes a 12-Grammy losing streak that is only equalled by Diana Ross, who now has a special Grammy Award to call her own.

After 12 losses with and without the Supremes, Diana Ross was finally awarded a Lifetime Acheivement Grammy Award.  That's right, 'Baby Love' and greatest hit 'Stop! In the Name of Love' lost their respective nominations for 1965 Best Rhythm & Blues Recording and 1966 Best Rock & Roll Vocal Performance.  The way Ms. Ross reacted in press room photos, she could not have been happier to be acknowledged.  Two Supremes songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame giving Ross Grammys for those.

And it's important to recall that some of Grammy's biggest losers of all weren't even nominated for anything the majority of their careers.  Depeche Mode have been nominated only 5 times and never won.  Their nominations didn't come in until the 1990s when their most groundbreaking and influential work in using industrial and all-electronic sounds was already behind them.  They've been making music together since 1980.

There is a long list of extremely talented artists who have never won a single Grammy.  It certainly seems Katy Perry is on the radar to get one in the future - especially when the Recording Academy invites her to perform at televised shows and the MusiCares Person of the Year concert.
