The Iowa wrestling team defeated Minnesota by criteria on Saturday night and sophomore Nick Moore was a big reason why.
The former Iowa City West state champion moved up to No. 13 in this week’s national rankings after defeating No. 10 Cody Yohn of Minnesota, 8-2. He also was honored as the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday.
The Hawkeyes wound up tying the Gophers but won the dual based on total match points. If Moore does not score the upset win at 165 pounds, the Hawkeyes do not come away with the road win.
Moore, a four-time state champion for Iowa City West, is 11-3 on the season and is 5-0 in Big Ten competition.
He is the third Hawkeye to win a weekly honor this year. Top-ranked senior Matt McDonough won the honor on Nov. 20, while fellow top-ranked junior Derek St. John earned the award on Dec. 11. It was the first time Moore has been honored in his short Iowa career.
The third-ranked Hawkeyes (15-1, 5-0) will host top-ranked Penn State (8-0, 5-0) on Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual will begin at 8:04 p.m. and fewer than 1,700 tickets remain. If you are not in attendance, you can catch the action on the Big Ten Network.
