Updated June 2014: An Iowa biology teacher is making headlines after losing 60 pounds in six months on an all-McDonald's diet.
Inspired by the 2004 Morgan Spurlock documentary "Super Size Me," John Cisna ate nothing but McDonald's food for six months straight and lost 60 pounds.
In Super Size Me, Spurlock followed a 5,000-calorie-a-day McDonald's diet for 30 days, during which time he gained 25 pounds, suffered severe liver dysfunction and developed depression.
Cisna, who had never worked out, walked for 45 minutes a day and followed a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet. "I had the Big Macs, the Quarter Pounders with cheese," he told KCCI News. "I had sundaes, I had ice cream cones."
John, 54, told his local McDonald's about his weight-loss plan before starting it. The manager of the McDonald's was so pleased with Cisna's idea he provided the food free of charge.
A typical daily menu for Cisna consisted of egg-white delights and oatmeal with one-percent milk for breakfast, a salad at lunch and a value meal for dinner.
After three months, the 6-foot-tall John shed 37 pounds, dropping from 282 pounds to 222 pounds. Cisna said his weight loss proves that you can lose weight on practically any diet as long as you balance calorie intake with output.
Cisna also disagrees with critics who blame fast-food restaurants for the obesity epidemic, saying health is a personal — not corporate — responsibility. "We all have choices," he said. "It's our choices that make us fat, not McDonald's."
