Iowa state Rep. Dan Muhlbauer (D-Manilla) told the Daily Times Herald that semi-automatic weapons should be banned, and proposed confiscating them from law-abiding citizens, The Blaze reported Tuesday.
“We cannot have big guns out here as far as the big guns that are out here, the semi-automatics and all of them,” he told the Herald. “We can’t have those running around out here. Those are not hunting weapons.”
“We should ban those in Iowa,” he added.
According to Douglas Burns, Muhlbauer not only supports a statewide ban and a voluntary buy-back plan, “but he would go further if needed."
The Democratic lawmaker said “the state of Iowa should take semi-automatic weapons away from Iowans who have legally purchased them prior to any ban that is enacted if they don’t give their weapons up in a buy-back program.”
“Even if you have them, I think we need to start taking them,” he said.
"Templeton Mayor Ken Behrens, a Republican, said Muhlbauer’s proposal smacks of an overreach that is out of touch with Carroll County," Burns wrote.
“I would hate to see a law where it would be mandated that somebody start taking guns,” the mayor said. “I don’t think that would go over well.”
Burns also reported that Muhlbauer owns "a .410 shotgun, a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol."
Muhlbauer suggested going after violent video games, but said he didn't know how the legislature would keep children from playing games he doesn't approve of.
“We’ve got these video games out here for these little kids,” he told Burns. “Maybe it’s time we start pulling them away. They’re playing some really nasty games on there that are shoot-‘em-up. Evidently our culture is pointing toward this.”
