Instagram may be owned by Facebook, but it sounds like Instagram is indeed operating as its own business. In fact, the company is going to do something big and it sounds like they are planning to offer something big to users. According to a new Mashable report published on Dec. 11, Instagram has been sending out events to websites and blogs for a mystery event in New York later this month.

The company has made no effort to hint what could be announced at the event, but it sounds like they could be improving the service. One person from Mashable believes that the company will make the service more like SnapChat. “Instagram Chats (will) include a messaging or chat function for real-time discussion,” the reports reveals, making Instagram, “A suite of tools for enhancing images with text (MEME and standard captions) and more conversational imagery.”

Facebook has been losing some steam with users, and Instagram has been more popular with people because of the sharing features with images and the lack of profile in comparison to Facebook. After Facebook removed the option of hiding a profile, many people simply stopped using the social media network.

It should be noted that Instagram hasn’t hinted of any big reveals, meaning it could be something simple as a Christmas party. But it could also be about a big reveal, such as a hardware product. But chances are that Mark Zuckerberg will not be at the event.

What do you think will be the focus of the event?
