In anticipation of seeing the film I loved as a kid for the first time in ages (maybe decades), I thought it would be cool to take a look at that first installment in the Indiana Jones franchise by way of a snappy slideshow of behind-the-scenes photographs.
It’s a real treat to see these on set pictures from the pre-CGI era of film making featuring Spielberg directing Harrison Ford (both in their late 30's at the time) and cast in locations like Hawaii, Tunisia, France, and sound stages in California and England.
Many people forget that the huge box office hit “Raiders” was nominated for 9 Oscars - it took home 4 Academy Awards for Art Direction, Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects, but sadly lost for Best Picture to “Chariots of Fire.”
I remember seeing it with my dad upon its release the summer of '81 at the Ram Theatre in downtown Chapel Hill. On the way home afterwards he told me about how it was based on the old cliffhanger serials of his youth. He also told me that it was impossible for a man to receive that many punches to the head and continue walking.
