Illegal street racing rehab?

Authorities all around the world are beefing up their anti-street racing policy and continuing to crush illegal street racer's vehicles. They are getting so tyrannical with this policy that they are even crushing cars modified for street racing without actually being caught street racing. Getting ready to add a nice mod to your car? You better think twice. This is perceived by most as a quick fix for a big problem, but in reality it only makes the streets even more dangerous. Think about it from the street racer's perspective. If you know your car is going to be crushed, you'll either quit street racing or run when police show up. Street racing is an addictive problem, just like alcoholism and drug abuse. It provides the participant with an adrenaline buzz, similar to cocaine or other stimulants. So typically quitting isn't an option, leaving only high speed evasion.

Just "quitting" street racing cold turkey is not an easy thing to do, if it was the problem wouldn't be as massive as it is. The lure of popularity, making money, and the adrenaline buzz is just too much for some to quit. Instead of crushing their vehicles and giving them a reason to drive even faster in order to protect their vehicles, maybe authorities and government officials should offer abuse classes similar to AA or drug rehab. When alcoholics are treated, does their house or favorite bar get crushed? No, they are taught the proper way to deal with their addiction and then healing occurs.

Still not convinced street racing is an addiction? Let's take a look at the definition of "addiction". Illegal street racing is blend of chemical and behavioral addiction. It's chemical because of the rush, and behavioral because it becomes part of their life. Chemical addiction is defined as an uncontrollable habit of using a drug. In this case, the drug is adrenaline. Behavioral addiction is defined by Wikipedia as "is any activity, substance, object, or behavior that has become the major focus of a person's life to the exclusion of other activities, or that has begun to harm the individual or others physically, mentally, or socially." I'd venture to say anyone that invests hundreds of wrench hours and thousands of dollars into a vehicle specifically for street racing and it's benefits suits the definition. But why isn't there any out reach programs to help these poor souls?

Take a look on the web for street racing rehab, and you won't find anything about it. If the world as a whole is going to address and fix the illegal street racing issue, we must treat it as we do other addictions. By simply taking a macho approach and crushing cars, this does nothing but encourage racers to flee police and in the end makes the roads a much more dangerous place. Maybe if the government spent money on rehabilitation programs instead of wasting money on crush'em policies we would see a decrease in illegal street racing. Enjoy the following Cro-Magnon attempt at fixing an addiction. If you can't beat it, destroy it.... FAIL!

Quote from video below: "If you want to get in the business of street racing, souping it up, or driving it, this is what's going to happen to your car. We're going to take it away from you, and we're going to destroy it."

The bigger story here isn't just illegal street racing, it's taking on modified cars as a whole. This has got to stop! These guys below are destroying cars that are modified, based on a preemptive cause. They haven't even been caught street racing, and yet they are still being destroyed. A couple of weeks ago, a guy came out of a side road and hit my passenger doors. I was the only person in my car, and am fine.

It went to the body shop and now it looks like a brand new car. I was sad, but am now very happy.
