Hyundai Veloster and Sonata lauded for low cost of ownership

On February 7, three Hyundai models were recognized for low cost of ownership at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Kelley Blue Books KBB.com’s “5-Year Cost to Own Award” was presented to the 2013 Veloster, the 2013 Veloster Turbo, and the 2013 Sonata. Compared to any other vehicle in their category, each vehicle was found to have the lowest cost of ownership over the initial 5-year ownership period. The 2013 Veloster won in the Compact Car Segment, the 2013 Veloster Turbo took first place in the Sporty Compact category, and the 2013 Sonata outpaced its competition such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry to take the top spot in the Mid-Size Car segment. The Veloster should appeal to Angelenos who desire a sporty compact with excellent mileage and innovative design. The Sonata is geared for Angelenos who desire a nicely-styled mid-sized sedan that provides a comfortable ride for mom, dad, and three kids.

“Low cost of ownership is one area in which Hyundai strives to be industry-leading,” noted Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. He added, “Receiving these awards from KBB.com showcases our ability to cater to the varying dynamics of our customers. Regardless of which vehicle our customers choose - a trendy and ergonomic Veloster, a sport-focused Veloster Turbo, or a family-oriented and user-friendly Sonata - value for money and low cost to own are truly characteristic of the Hyundai ownership experience.”

“The 5-Year Cost to Own Awards honor the vehicles and brands, both luxury and non-luxury, with the lowest projected ownership costs,” noted Dan Ingle, vice president of vehicle valuations for Kelley Blue Book. He added, “Highly competitive pricing and lower depreciation costs provide Hyundai’s vehicle line-up with a notable advantage. Coupled with impressive fuel economy and affordable insurance rates, it is no surprise that Hyundai is taking this honor in multiple vehicle segments.”

To determine cost of ownership, Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own Award takes into account all significant expenses of car ownership such as depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs, and state fees for new models. Kelley notes that the purpose of the awards is to help shoppers make more informed new car buying decisions by breaking down typical ownership cost details and naming the brands and models with the lower projected five-year total.

The Veloster three-door coupe has a base MSRP of $17,600. It is powered by a 138 HP GDI DOHC four cylinder engine and is equipped with an impressive list of standard features such as a Blue Link Telematic System and a seven-inch multimedia touchscreen. The turbo version has a base MSRP of $22,100. The price increase comes with a significant boost in horsepower: $22,100. It also boasts a unique fascia/grill and bodykit. It also features more goodies such as proximity key entry and push button start.
