An emaciated dog whose body screamed of long-time neglect, was dropped off at the Oahu, Hawaii, SPCA on Friday.
According to Saturday's KHON2 News, he had been found by a good Samaritan in a Kunia farm field.
The dog, dubbed "Malulani" by his caregivers, was little more than skin and bones. Not only had he been starved, but he was covered in thousands of ticks. According to the Oahu SPCA, it appeared that Malulani had endured a dreary, lonesome life on the end of a chain.
That pitiful life ended after Malu was taken to the SPCA.
On Friday evening, the Oahu SPCA stated that Malulani was resting in a "very padded and warm bed," following being given fluids and medications. They described him as a gentle boy who seemed to know that he was being helped.
Tragically, the next morning, Malu took a turn for the worse and passed away in the arms of the Oahu SPCA Adoption Counselor, Sarah Smith.
Abigain Bingham, Oahu SPCA Executive Director, told KHON2 News:
He knew he was loved, he knew his life meant something to all of us,
Following Malulani's passing, the Oahu SPCA decided to create a special fund in Malulani's memory, to be called "Malu's Fund."
All donations made to the memorial fund will directly benefit severely neglected animals who require immediate, lifesaving care. Click here to learn more.
Malu's deplorable state of health did not happen over night. The extent of organ damage he sustained from long-term starvation took time and during that time, he suffered greatly.
Bingham reminds everyone:
"People need to take notice, if you see somebody mistreating an animal, don't ignore it. This animal has feelings and hurts just like people do,"
