Holocaust Museum shooter von Brunn a 9/11 'truther' who hated 'neo-cons', Bush, McCain

The man accused of opening fire at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC on June 10, James W. von Brunn, left a trail of unhinged writings around the internet.

The anti-semitism of von Brunn is the first thing one notices when visiting these bizarre websites. However, like those of most "white supremacists", many of von Brunn's political views track "Left" rather than "Right." Clearly, a re-evaluation of these obsolete definitions is long overdue.

For example, he unleashed his hatred of both Presidents Bush and other "neo-conservatives" in online essays. As even some "progressives" such as the influential Adbusters magazine publicly admit, "neoconservative" is often used as a derogatory code word for "Jews". As well, even a cursory glance at "white supremacist" writings reveals a hatred of, say, big corporations that is virtually indistinguishable from that of anti-globalization activists.

James von Brunn's advocacy of 9/11 conspiracy theories also gives him an additional commonality with individuals on the far-left.

None of this will surprise readers of Jonah Goldberg's bestseller Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Change , which clearly demonstrates that "fascism" of the kind advocated by the British National Party (BNP) and the likes of James W. von Brunn is just as likely to reflect "leftwing" views as "rightwing" ones.

In fact, anti-semitism is something the New Left and the "Far Right" have had in common since the 1980s, which is why so many former leftists like David Horowitz defected from one side to the other during the Reagan era and beyond. It also helps explain the otherwise baffling alliance between the Left and radical Islam.

That this shooting occurred shortly after President Obama's former mentor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, blamed "the Jews" for his lack of access to his former parishioner is a troubling confluence of events as well.

UPDATE (June 11/09): More details of von Brunn's beliefs have emerged.

For more info: visit reports by Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea, who reflects on DC's designation as a "gun free zone."

A really confused person did this shooting.
I guess he had a identity crisis. The original Nazi party was rightwing but this guy hates the right. So that would make him a extreme left communist?

I think you've missed the point Goldberg makes in Liberal Fascism which is, simply, that Fascism, Socialism, and Communism are all 'Progressive' left wing movements, are all collectivist, and are all statist. Lumping the BNP, which is conservative (liberal democratic), in with these evil movements is unfair and untrue.

  • democratsarefascists 5 years ago

The guy wasn't confused. He fits right in with the Democrats. I'm surprised Reverend Wright wasn't right there with him.

    Incidentally, "Ron Paul" and "Republican?"

    Nice try, Kos.

Yes, the oath keeper's group is full of liberals. He commented on an article:

And, there are alot of Leftists who are Birthers. Sure there are. He wrote an article.
    h ttp://tinyurl.com/nukjoe

Lots of Leftists preach that the Federal Reserve is a sham. Sure, sure they do.

Do you realize how truly pathetic this article will read by morning, when more details, more links will be found?

I think I'll send this article to some bloggers. Let them take a look at it.

    Matt,

The Nazi party was not right wing that is a common misconception - they were the National Socialist Party - shortened to Nazi. There was nothing right wing about Hitler or his party who believed in a totalitarian statist government having total power and control over everyone as evidenced by the Holocaust. The Nazi party also began using paganist symbols and never religion - Hitler's only religion was that of himself (Worshiping him only).

9/11 was an inside job, even a brief look at what happened would tell you that. 2 airplanes knocked down 3 buildings made of steel? Give me a break. The media just wants to cover up the truth and anyone who tries to find it. Nice job trying to smear this wacko with "9/11" truth to scare people from looking into the events of that day.

Is this The Onion? Von Brunn hated McCain because he wasn't Right ENOUGH. And his 9/11 conspiracy theories hinge on the "fact" that only 1 Jew was killed, hence all the others were warned. This nutjob and the one who murdered Dr. Tiller are all the Right's. Own them.

  • Chris 5 years ago

    9/11 is an inside job.

Just yesterday there was a huge interview on coast to coast exposing the 9/11 was an inside job...then all of a sudden you guys make a fake connection to 9/11 truth on this idiot with absolutely no proof of that.

9/11 'truther? So your little plan is put into action to make us U.S citizen who want the real truth look like the bad guy. Why don't you say "White Supremacist" in your headline? so readers here think white supremacists listen to rev. wright? that's wacked.

"original Nazi party was rightwing "

uh, no. From start to finish it was an agressively LEFT wing party. The only "right wing" thing about Nazi-ism is in managed under the pressure of war to co-opt conservatives.

  • thisisnonsense 5 years ago

Right and Left exist on an ideological continuum that sometimes converges at the extremes. Both left-wing and right-wing extremists groups have exhibited bigotry and anti-semitism, in addition to anti-globalization and anti-establishment sentiments. Both show willingness to employ acts of domestic terrorism, putting lives in danger to intimidate or coerce government or society, or to further social or political agendas.

The article calls for us to reevaluate the obsolete notions of Right and Left at the extremes, yet then attempts to place the Museum gunman on the left, unreservedly. The evidence presented is the man's belief in a 9/11 conspiracy and protests against "neo-conservatives," which the article notes can sometimes be anti-semitism cloaked in political criticism. The truth is the extreme right includes white supremacy groups, which often embrace extreme nationalist and ethnocentric views. The Right would be best to put down the labels and denounce hatred and violence

  • Zephyr 5 years ago

    1) this guy who killed the museum guard is a murderer, plain and simple. His act is despicable.

    2) 9/11 was indeed an inside job. Anyone willing to know the truth behind the incident can see it, and growing numbers are.

    3) the fact that the MSM is, unison, trying to use this contemptible act of murder to paint those aware of 9/11 reality as crazy shows how desperate they are to stop this growing movement.

    That act itself is telling.

AS an unapologetic lefty I must apologize. Yes Von Brunn is a killer and who cares that he was a leftist? The mark has already been made that he is a right-wing nut boy by CNN and Fox so the court of public opinion will know nothing but this. We won this one, now get over it Neo-CONS!

  • Bill Owen 5 years ago

Very glad to see all the pushback from ordinary people on this neocon propaganda article. It was not even a good effort. Yeah, sure, he is really a "lefty", just like the guy who shot Tiller. You can only push reality so far Kathy.

And 911 was an inside job - no amount of name calling can change the physics. Kerosene CANNOT melt steel, and nanothermite was found in the debris.

BTW, does Cheney own this site?

What!? I have *never* heard that before, *anywhere*. I've heard (largely untrue) allegations that 'Zionist' is a euthemism for Jew, and I'm sure in some cases (but a tiny minority) it is used that way. But never in my life have I heard anyone suggest that neoconservatism is anti-Semitic code.

  • Jeff 5 years ago

    To Bill Owen:

You DO realize he was a truther like YOU, right?

That's been primarily a hobbyhorse of the very extreme left. Or didn't you get the memo? And he hated "neocons", too. Sounds to me like he'd get along fine with you.

He also sounds suspiciously like Rev. Wright (you remember him, don't you?), who just this week blamed "Jews" for not letting him talk this his "son", President Obama.

Fact is, this deranged guy attached himself to every out there conspiracy theory the extreme right OR left threw out there for the past 30 years. No one can, or should, be held responsible for his batty worldview - even anti-neocon/truthers like you.

A digression about kerosene and steel - steel doesn't need to get hot enough to melt to be weakened enough that the weight above will cause it to collapse from weight on it from above. Look into it, you might learn something. Physics and all....

Additionally, none of the people I know who support pro-life find a “commonality” with Scott Roeder? Is this gearing the country up for anyone who disagrees with the government will now be considered a “domestic terrorist?” By the way, a government with a history of admitted false flag operations to get its agenda across. Dear Editor,

May God receive him, and comfort his family.

And I wish to express my outrage that the Holocaust, unlike any other historical event, is not subject to critical examination. Furthermore I deplore the fact that many so-called democratic states have laws that criminalize an examination and understanding of the Holocaust. It is my position that the veracity of Holocaust assertions should be determined in the marketplace of scholarly discourse and not in our legislatures bodies and courthouses.

You know, all this Von Brunn-esque raving about "neocons" and "Zionists" and "media whores" isn't really making you 911 "truthers" case look any stronger or more reasonable. And its a simple fact that both the far left and the far right both believe Israel to be an illegal state, and have come to share many concerns about globalization, etc. The same phenomenon was observable with regard to Tim McVeigh. That's a fact.

  • Lydia 5 years ago

    To Michael Santomauro:

I agree with you 100%. If a thing is true it should WELCOME careful examination vs. try to criminalize it (and succeed in Canada and Europe so far!).

The fact that there is legislation ANYWHERE against "Holocaust Denial" and the fact that not only Gemar Rudolph but also David Irving, Ernst Zundel, and others have been imprisoned for challenging even the numbers of Jews claimed to have been affected ...that should be a red flag to anyone with an ounce of integrity.

Speaking of overly simplistic or down right wrong terms and definitions - why do you misuse the term 'semite' ? I mean isn't that mythology what got people born into Euro-Jewish families in trouble historically in the first place ? I mean white Europeans who erroneously believed they were 'semites' actually confused brain washed Euro-Christians that they really were semites and further the murderers of their mythological Jesus ! Both sides were wrong and continue to be !

In truth the term 'semite' is properly left to all whopresently speak a 'semitic' languge. The white folk who think they are 'semites' made there's up or re-invented it from a formerly dead languge.I wonder if those who spoke Hebrew would even recognize their strange accent.Ha.
Also most Eastern European Jews show a lightness or whiteness of skin that hints of probable Vitamin D deficiency in their past that is unlikely to be the result of a Middle Eastern or desert origen in recent past.

are we careful not to parallel 9/11 truthers and people against neo-cons as dangerous people? also, the "far left" has nothing to do with anti-neo cons.

hence if this guy is far left, then our supposed commander-in-chief - who of course was norn in kenya - is also guilty.
