Hermey the Dentist Elf

See also

Most dental folks know about the character named Hermey the Dentist Elf from the show that comes on once a year called Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer created in 1964. Paul Soles was the voice of Hermey. Hermey was the one elf who didn't want to work in the toy shop and expressed his desire to become a dentist. He even pulled out a book on dentistry while working on toys. His supervisor didn't seem to think much of Hermey and he was threatened with losing his job for poor performance and because he just didn't fit in with the other workers. Hermey eventually runs away from Santa's Workshop in Christmastown and meets up with Rudolph in a snow drift.

If you are a Hermey fan there is a place called Stanley's Olde Maple Lane Farm in Edwards, Ontario Canada has a building on display right now called Hermey's Dental Office.

"After returning from the Island of Misfit Toys, Hermey realized his dream of becoming a dentist. With an Elfian diet consisting of Candy Canes, Candy Corn, Candy Floss, & Syrup there was a lot of work to be done and Hermey was soon able to open franchise locations all over the world at each Elf outpost!" according to the Stanley's web page.

Justin Marquis Ph.D. wrote about Hermey the Elf:

There is never any indication in the story why he wants to be a dentist. It seems to be an inherent desire to help others by providing a valuable service that is not available in elf society. When this misfit elf expresses his desire to deviate from the norm, he is treated with scorn, contempt, ridicule, and ultimately ostracized from elf society. From our perspective, his ambition does not seem strange, but from within the constraints of elven society, he is a freak – Much like his pal Rudolph.

A race horse was even named Herme the Dentist bred by Mike Provost in 2009. Herme the Dentist earned $51,300 in winnings and has since died.

Valerie Plame in her book called Fair Game about her time with the CIA talked about the "Island of Misfit Toys" which referred to the CPD or counterproliferation division. It was the first bureau without a geographical location much like the one in the movie where Hermey the dentist played a leading role.

This just goes to show that Hermey and Rudolph have had influence on many things outside of the movie that has been around for 49 Christmases now.

Have a happy holiday season!
