Helmet cam captures motorcycle rider trying to cross Colorado floodwaters

September 2013 went into the history books as one of the most disastrous in Colorado history as torrential rains brought devastating flooding. Most residents heeded warnings meant to save lives but newly discovered video showcases one man ignoring them and nearly drowning in the process.

The video, released by action camera maker GoPro last week, features motorcycle rider Michael Henao attempting to cross flooded Colorado roadways near Boulder. The results were nearly deadly.

Shown from his helmet-mounted camera, Henao starts on on mud-covered roads but then continues on what is clearly a closed road. Water that initially appears calm gets deeper and runs faster as he rides further into the floodwaters.

Soon it is clear the motorcyclist is in very real trouble.

The swift moving water sweeps the bike out from under him and Henao struggles to stay on the bike. His efforts were for naught. He is separated from his motorcycle and both he and the equipment are swept down river.

The video shows the rider’s head occasionally dropping under water as saving the bike is clearly no longer a concern; saving his own life is. As he is pushed in the water, trees rush by and Henao’s arms flail as he tries to stop his unexpected swim.

Henao did survive saying on his YouTube channel, “Took 2 days to find my bike! Had to wait 9 days before I was able to dig her out!”

In a week the video has garnered over 400,000 views and more than 1,700 comments.

The discussion among YouTube users is less than flattering about GoPro’s choice to publish the video and Henao irresponsible actions trying to ride through the flood.

One comment seemed to sum up most saying, “This guy is an idiot, lucky to be alive and IMO, not the type of stuff that should be used for advertising.” Numerous commenters suggested Henao should be the recipient of a Darwin Award.
