It is Oct. 16 and that means a new Xbox 360 title is now available to Xbox Live Gold members for free. Those with a Gold account and an Xbox 360 can download Bungie’s first Xbox 360 title, Halo 3, for no charge starting today as part of Microsoft's Games with Gold program. Halo 3 will be free to Gold members until the end of the month – Oct. 31.

Originally released on July 6, 2007, Halo 3 helped shape the Xbox 360’s online community with its multiplayer features. Supporting system link multiplayer along with generous online features, Halo 3 was a major online title for the Xbox 360 when it saw release with its 16-player multiplayer, 4-player campaign co-op, and DLC.

The title quickly joined ranks with Gears of War as the top online multiplayer game on Xbox 360 before the arrival and eventual dominance Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare would bring in Nov. 2007.

Aside from a strong multiplayer component, Halo 3 also has a good campaign that closes the chapter on the original story.

The epic saga continues with Halo 3, the hugely anticipated third chapter in the highly successful and critically acclaimed Halo franchise created by Bungie. Master Chief returns to finish the fight, bringing the epic conflict between the Covenant, the Flood, and the entire human race to a dramatic, pulse-pounding climax.

Halo 3 can be downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace right now. If you cannot access you Xbox 360 at the moment, add the title to your download list via the Marketplace online store here. Halo 3 will require 5.72GB of HDD space.
