Two British men who hacked into the servers of Sony Music and stole thousands of data files have escaped jail time.
British newspaper The Telegraph reported on Saturday that 27-year-old James Marks and 26-year-old James McCormick were given six month suspended sentences for one year and 100 hours community service for hacking Sony.
According to a report from the British Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) the two men met through a fan website forum, obtained a compromised e-card which had been used to share data and enabled them to access the servers in the US.
After Sony Music identified the security breach SOCA launched an investigation and arrested Marks and McCormick in May 2011.
The hackers were huge Michael Jackson fans and targeted Sony Music because it has the exclusive license to the late musician's catalog.
After Michael Jackson's death in 2009 Sony signed a $250 million deal with the late pop star's estate to sell his unreleased recordings The files stolen by the hackers included the unreleased tracks that Sony plans to release across 10 albums.
