We spent Sunday of President’s Day cruising the trails at Gunstock and found the place in perfect form. The mid day of a three day weekend holiday proved the popularity of the mountain with moderate lines at almost all of the lifts.

Learners and newbies all over the green slopes

One of the great things about Gunstock Mountain Resort is the separation between the learning areas and the green slopes where kids and novices perfect their skills before heading out onto the trails on the mountain. The learning area showed just how popular Gunstock’s learning program is. There were lots of kids on the hill with teachers and a solid bevy of parents smiling from below.

Lower blues

The lower blue slopes served by the Ramrod Quad were busy but the lines short and service quick. The snow on these trails was beautiful, packed powder and with granulated sugar topping. Strangely, when Smith was busy its neighbor Phelps was not and then Phelps had the crowd and Smith was open.

Upper Mountain

For most of the afternoon the crowds waiting for the Panorama Lift was intense with waits of fifteen minutes or so but around 3:15 someone pulled the plug. The trails from the top and in the Pistol area were as good as the lower slopes, though a bit colder with occasional gusts of wind. The skiing was about as good as you can get it.

The prospects

Gunstock Mountain Resort has plenty of snow and they are very good at grooming. Over the past couple of weeks lots of natural stuff has fallen on their solid base leaving weeks of great skiing ahead. Just within the past week they have added 16 inches. With the end of President’s Day weekend today the overflow crowds should leave a decent crowd behind and lines at the lifts that are short.

Night Skiing

Gunstock is also open for night skiing under the lights from Tuesday through Saturday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights they run from 4 to 9 pm and on Friday andSaturday from 4 until 10pm. Tuesday night get their 2 for 1 special and on Friday night Mom, Dad and two kids can ski for just $99.

Getting to Gunstock

Get to I-93 north and take it to the Tilton-Laconia exit (exit 20). Take Routes 11 and 3 to the left at the exit until Route 11 leaves to the left at a traffic light. Take Route 11(the Laconia bypass) watch for Gunstock signs and Route 11a to the right, At the bottom of the exit turn right for a few miles following the Gunstock signs.
