“Don’t buy Obamacare insurance just because the government tells you to,” Gun Owners of America advised members and supporters in a Thursday alert. “Don’t buy insurance just because the President tells you to and threatens to fine you if you don’t.”
A civil disobedience stance represents both a landmark step for a national organization as well as a bold departure from the direction taken by other national gun rights groups, particularly the National Rifle Association.
NRA’s silence is no doubt due to its influence in having language it advocated inserted into the “health care” edict under a section titled “Protection of Second Amendment Gun Rights,” which among other things, ostensibly prohibits doctors from documenting patient answers to questions about guns, limits related data collection and databases, and precludes eligibility and premium rate decisions based on lawful firearms and ammunition possession and storage.
“Obamacare, as drafted, purported to protect some, but not all, of our Second Amendment rights,” GOA counters. “Yet Obama pretty much showed his hands with Executive Action 16, where he encouraged doctors to ask kids and their parents about guns and enter that information into a federally run database.”
And there are other dangers, the group claims, which it characterizes as “intentional.”
“Obamacare will take the gun ban that has disarmed more than 150,000 military veterans and expand it to potentially cover millions and millions of additional Americans,” GOA charges.
“Are you ready to have a government bureaucrat decide if you may own a gun or not, with no day in court?” GOA asks. “Once doctors start entering your personal information into the medical database, there will be nothing to stop the FBI from using your medical information to deny you the right to purchase a firearm.
“President ‘Above-the-Law’ Obama has now waived Obamacare for everyone except for us -- the ‘little guys,’” GOA charges, citing waivers for unions, Congress and their staffers, and businesses. “Obamacare is ‘the law of the land’ only when it suits Barack Obama’s purposes.
“The bottom line? Obama can’t force you to comply with Obamacare, if he’s not going to comply with it himself,” GOA maintains.
Is that true? Will any who resist find themselves facing a leviathan that cannot dare allow defiance?
“There will be legal foundations lining up at the courthouse door to establish that Obamacare can’t penalize Americans in 2014,” GOA predicts. “Gun Owners Foundation will join in their efforts. And, if necessary, we may bring the suit ourselves.
While GOA asks members to contact their representative and senators “to work towards repealing, defunding or delaying Obamacare,” ultimately supporters are asked if they are going to obey or defy, and “even be willing to pay a fine, on the chance that Obama doesn’t waive the penalties for failing to participate in Obamacare.”
That’s a question gun owners will need to consider and answer for themselves. Imagine the administration working up the nerve to begin punitive enforcement in the face of massive committed and defiant non-compliance, and the blowback if it does.
It will be interesting to see how many Americans decide to follow GOA’s suggestion, and not just gun rights advocates. No less a source than “Demos, a left-wing organization funded by George Soros” produced a report titled “Building a Healthy Democracy: Registering 68 Million People to Vote through Health Benefit Exchanges,” prompting author Diana West to ask “What if Obamacare was never about our health?”
And while Demos, for reasons only it can explain, has chosen to remove the report from its website following conservative observers calling attention to it, Gun Rights Examiner was able to retrieve an html copy using Google Cache, and urges readers to access it, save a copy of it, and share it. And since no apparent copyright notice appears on the report or on the Demos website, a copy converted back to pdf, albeit lacking original formatting, has been saved as a pdf file to this correspondent’s Scribd account.
