The Green Run Stallions lost their first two meetings with Maury during the regular season but Saturday afternoon at Scope in Norfolk, Virginia, exacted some revenge with a 58-52 win in a bigger moment – the 5A Conference 9 Championship.
Maury came into the game ranked 2nd in the state with a 21-1 record.
The Commodores used a 7-0 run late in the first period to surge out front 9-7 after eight minutes of play. In the second period behind guard Tyler Blount’s 11 first half points, the Stallions took a 22-21 lead into halftime.
Green Run began to break the Maury man-man press in the 3rd period and take advantage by scoring on layups and close range. They also won the battle of the trenches by continuously scrambling for second chance shots while also stopping Maury’s front line. Forward Edward Gordan scored six points as the Stallions surged out front 35-29 lead with 2:32 left in the 3rd. Green Run’s Jamaal Matin scored on a layup and short shot off an offensive rebound and the Stallions ended the 3rd period ahead 39-35.
An early 11-2 run by the visiting Stallions solidified their lead to 52-42 as Matin and Forward Shaun James combined for six points, giving the Virginia Beach school a big advantage with less than three minutes remaining.
Maury would close to 52-46 on a steal and layup by Coleman but Blount closed the door with two more free throws with 14 seconds remaining, giving Green Run a 56-48 lead. They moved their record to 20-4.
Blount and Matin both scored 15 and Gordan added 10 for the 5A Conference 9 Champions. . Freshman Matt Coleman led Maury with 19 points. Both teams advanced to the playoffs next week as part of the Virginia State Championships.
