GQ: Penn State fans are 'urine tossers'

According to a ranking of the nation's worst sports fans in America by GQ, Penn State fans are in the top ten. Number seven to be specific.

Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fans took the top two spots in the ranking and West Virginia was named the worst college fans in the nation. Penn State came in at number seven and was ripped for previous episodes that took place against Ohio State fans in previous seasons.

From the GQ list:

Behold: a group of fans so vile that the university had to adopt a resolution denouncing "negative cheering" all the way back in 2000. Loophole: They didn't tell the kids not to throw stuff! Thus students from the Princeton Review's 2010 top party school have pelted visiting players and band members with snowballs, mud balls, and bottles of urine. Lacking projectiles during the 2008 riots that followed a win over Ohio State, Penn [State] fans uprooted small trees to hurl at police. And let's not forget the notorious 2007 incident in which a crowd of onlookers cheered as a student chased down two OSU fans and threw a full can of beer at their heads. Video of that assault was proudly posted on YouTube, tagged as "comedy."

In response to this poll John Tecce, a Penn State student and the Vice President of Paternoville, tells Examiner "This "ranking" is a complete and total sham. Perhaps a bit of research would have told the writer that the only student charged in the "beer can incident" he refers to was a University of Pittsburgh student." Police records and previous reports on the incident confirm that to be true. To be fair police records will also confirm that a teenage fan at a Philadelphia Phillies game who ran on the field at Citizens Bank Park and was tasered last year was also a Penn State student. Perhaps this is a double whammy?

"There is no reason to take these rankings seriously," Tecce said.

Another Big Ten fan base, Wisconsin, also made the list. Other colleges on the list included Maryland, LSU, Duke and Oregon. LSU was the lone SEC school to make the list despite recent news of an Alabama fan poisoning trees at rival Auburn's sacred celebration spot at Toomer's Corner.

Former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit recently relocated his family from Ohio after rumors of death threats were sent his way by suspected Ohio State fans. Columbus area lawyer Christopher Cicero also received death threats following news that he was the one who e-mailed Jim Tressel about players' possible connection to a man involved in a drug trafficking investigation.

The point here is not to defend the actions of Penn State fans in the past, but merely to point out that this list is highly opinionated and skewed.
