While Dwight "Doc" Gooden was all smiles earlier this afternoon, as he signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans at the grand opening of the AT&T retail store inside the Queens Center Mall, underneath Gooden was sorrowed by the loss of his former catcher, Gary Carter.
"It hurts, it's a terrible loss. He was a good friend of mine," said Gooden in between signing autographs. Judging by Gooden's somber reaction, it was clear that he wanted to keep the mood positive, as he continued to greet the eager faithful lined up outside of the store waiting to meet the Mets World Series hero.
Gooden gave a full interview with ESPN's Michael Kay on the day of Carter's passing, sharing his vibrant memories of the fallen Mets catcher. Carter was laid to rest after a public memorial service Friday in Florida.
