Good Luck Charlie same sex couple episode sparks reaction in the UK

The story of the Disney show, Good Luck Charlie, introducing a same sex couple is making headlines in the UK.

The headline in the Daily Mail read Tuesday, “What would Walt say? The Disney Channel debuts its first ever same sex couple on the penultimate episode of Good Luck Charlie.”

The story was widely reported earlier in the mainstream American press. The story even played in Peoria with the headline in the Journal Star with the paper’s headline reading, “VIDEO: Disney Channel Introduces Same-Sex Couple on Good Luck Charlie,”

The Daily Mail says that the Disney Channel “has gone all Glee” by introducing the first-ever lesbian couple on a family series.

In the show, parents Amy and Bob Duncan, played by Leigh-Allyn Baker and Eric Allan Kramer, set up a playdate for Charlie (Mia Talerico) and one of her new friends. The parents of her new friend has two mothers.

Disney first said it was going to debut a gay couple in its show in June.

Disney says the storyline was developed after consulting with child psychologists.

Miley Cyrus Tweeted her support for the show while at least one conservative organization is urging a boycott of one of the show’s sponsors.

Reaction to the Mail story in the UK was mixed. The story drew more than 60 comments.

A reader questioned: “How is this news in this day and age?

Another reader commented, “This is Disney. They already ruined everything else by having it shoved down our throats. Let us keep Disney. So tired of them trying to make this the norm.”
