Golden Globe winners: ‘Homeland’ and Claire Danes, ‘Girls’ and Lena Dunham (Photos)

The 2013 Golden Globe Awards aired on NBC on Jan. 13 and the big winners in the TV categories were Showtime’s “Homeland” and Claire Danes, plus HBO’s “Girls” and Lena Dunham. On Sunday night, “Homeland” picked up Golden Globes for Best Television Drama, Best Actress (Claire Danes), and Best Actor (Damien Lewis). The comedy series “Girls” took home Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Comedy or Musical and Best Television Comedy or Musical Actress (Lena Dunham). While “Homeland’s” dominance was no big surprise, the awards for “Girls" and Dunham were unexpected, but very pleasant surprises.

Upon winning her very first Golden Globe, a visibly stunned Dunham stumbled a bit and said, “This award is for every woman who felt there wasn’t a space for her. This show has made a space for me." Claire Danes, who is an old pro at winning Golden Globes (this was her fourth), said more confidently, “I have to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for being so insanely generous towards me for so many years now.” She went on to pay tribute to the other nominees and added, “I want thank the other women in this category who are so badass, so brilliant, and have all in their own way contributed to making television this wonderfully rich place for really dynamic, complex, bold female characters."

Like "Homeland" and "Girls," "Game Change" was also a big winner and picked up Golden Globe Awards for Best Mini-Series or Television Movie, Best Actress and Best Actor.

Every year the Hollywood Foreign Press, a group of about 90 reporters from 55 countries, votes on its choices for the annual Golden Globes Awards. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, friends and “SNL” alumni, brilliantly hosted the festivities in 2013. They replaced Ricky Gervais, who caused a storm of controversy in 2012.
