If you think there is no religious aspect to the environmental movement, think again.
Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and a native of Costa Rica, opened the summit with an invokation to the ancient Mayan jaguar goddess Ixchel, saying that Ixchel was:
"the goddess of reason, creativity and weaving. May she inspire you -- because today, you are gathered in Cancun to weave together the elements of a solid response to climate change, using both reason and creativity as your tools."
According to Figueres, Ixchel is also a Mayan moon goddess.
Wikipedia says Ixchel is also referred to as “the goddess of making children", and the "goddess of medicine."
The Washington Post said that Figueres started her greeting in Spanish before switching to English:
"Excellencies, the goddess Ixchel would probably tell you that a tapestry is the result of the skilful interlacing of many threads...I am convinced that 20 years from now, we will admire the policy tapestry that you have woven together and think back fondly to Cancun and the inspiration of Ixchel."
193 countries are represented at the two-week meeting.
Earlier, a global warming scientist said rationing and 20 years of zero economic growth were necessary to stem the affects of climate change.
Ken Shepherd of Newsbusters noted that the invocation to a Mayan moon goddess was not mentioned in the print edition of the Post on Tuesday, and a Nexus search for "Ixchel" produced no results.
Shepherd compares this silence to the scorn exhibited by the so-called mainstream press when Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL) referenced Genesis 8:22 when he said, "The earth will end only when God declares its time to be over. Man will not destroy this earth. This earth will not be destroyed by a flood."
Update: Apparently, Ixchel is not listening, as talks face collapse over Kyoto Protocol.
Update 2: Stupidity on display as delegates to climate change summit sign petition to ban water.

Genesis 8:22
"The earth will end only when God declares its time to be over. Man will not destroy this earth. This earth will not be destroyed by a flood."
Nothing left to be said! Argument over.
The Earth won't be destroyed for another 5-6 billion years and will be inhabitable way before that. Science and Reason, not God and Fairy tales.
I am a strong believer in Global Warming, but not the kind that is created by anything man does. I believe in God created Global Warming.
"But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! " 2Peter 3:10-12
That you can take to the bank!
