Get Local: Mike Riley's 'I Taste Sound'

Since the beginning of the internet Webcomics have been around.  Webcomics bring a way for artist and writers to bring their stories to life with little to no money.  If you are wondering what Webcomics are, well here you go: Webcomics are comics published on a website.  They can vary in range from the traditional super hero tales to the wild and weird.  You can pretty much find anything you enjoy being done in Webcomics.

Let’s focus on the wild and weird.  Local artist Mike Riley has been making a Webcomic for the past couple of years.  He runs his own website http://www.itastesound.com/ which is updated frequently with new and fresh material.  He touches on the craziness of the world with a maddening twist of humor.  Along with his webcomic I Taste Sound, he recently released a collection of his material in I Taste Sound Volume 1: The Sword of Reason.  This book can be found on his website: http://www.itastesound.com/  I suggest you take a look at the wonderful madness Mike Riley is creating.  Now take a look below at my interview with Mike Riley creator of http://www.itastesound.com/.

Interview with Mike Riley:

1. So how did i taste sound come about?

I've drawn all my life, cartoons in particular and then onto painting in college... but long story short, the real impetuous for launching itastesound.com was that I had a bunch of strange plays-on-words in my sketchbooks that I envisioned as titles for paintings, but I didn't have time to paint.  The cartoons seemed like a way to boil down ideas and share them quick.  It turned out to be an interesting challenge and kind of snowballed from there.

2. Did you always have a sense of dark humor?

Interestingly, when I hear my stuff described as "dark" my first instinct is to defend it.    Other than a hand full of accidentally drowned prairie dogs, some fondu burns and a stabbing, I don't think of the book as dark.  Of the 300+ comics on the site now, there are definitely a few others that I'd put in that category, but I generally take pride in finding humor in strange places, but not in the morbid or unpleasant.  Perverse. Contrarian. Absurd... I'm fine with those charges.  But to answer your question; Yes always.

3. What was your inspiration for the i taste sound volume 1?

I was content with sharing the work online, mostly with people I knew, but a few months in it started getting around the net.  I had comments on Facebook from Londoners, residents of Michiganand other stranger people.  Because of that attention and because he loved the material himself, my friend Rich at Lowside Syndicate, talked me into letting them publish the collection.  Their other projects are custom-bike-culture oriented, but Rich really wanted to help me get my cartoons out there.

4. Are you going to have another printed volume?

I'd want to break even on the first book before I undertake a full-blown volume 2.  Online sales don't compare to the reaction the book gets when I show it to people at conventions for instance, but the travel time and expense don't quite justify the undertaking just yet.  I have some mini-comics and DIY projects in mind for 2012, but volume 2 is further off.

5. Do you have any new projects on the horizon?

I intend to post two new comics every week at itastesound.com, at least until the government unplugs the internet.  I also have 3 new sequential stories underway beginning with Furry Liberation Army probably in early March and some other surprises.
