A special concert tour with five acts, several with direct Beatles links, from the '60s British Invasion in celebration of the event's 50th anniversary headlined by Gerry & the Pacemakers (“Ferry Cross the Mersey,” “Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying,” “How Do You Do It,” “I Like It”), will tour the U.S. in September, it was announced by tour producer Andrew Sandoval. .
Also performing on the tour will be Mike Pender's Searchers (“Needles & Pins”), Chad & Jeremy (“Yesterday's Gone,” “Summer Song”), Denny Laine (“Go Now”), also a former member of Paul McCartney's Wings, and Billy J. Kramer (“Little Children,” “Bad To Me”). Both Kramer and Gerry & the Pacemakers were a part of Beatles manager Brian Epstein's stable of artists.
"It is a dream come true,” Sandoval said in his announcement. “I can't wait to stage these concerts with great setlists, faithful arrangements of the classic songs, beautiful multimedia and not your run-of-the-mill oldies package. A cut above and a royal return to these shores of the greatest pop music ever." Sandoval helmed the recent Monkees tour.
The tour is scheduled now for eight shows. The first will be Sept. 12 at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, N.J. The rest of the tour will be Sept. 13 in Philadelphia, Sept. 14 in Westbury, N.Y., Sept. 15 in Alexandria, VA., Sept. 17 in Greensburg, PA., Sept. 19 in Los Angeles (Beverly Hills), Sept. 20 in Valley Center, CA. and Sept. 21 in Saratoga, CA. A spokesman for the tour said other dates might be added.
Tickets for the Pittsburgh show are already on sale. Presales of tickets for the shows in Montclair, N.J., and Westsbury, N.Y., begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, in Montclair, N.J., while ticket presales for the Glenside, PA, Alexandria, VA., and Los Angeles shows starts Friday, according to Ticketmaster.
The new tour sparks reminders of a similar British Invasion tour in the '80s also headlined by Gerry and the Pacemakers, and also featuring Freddie and the Dreamers, Chad & Jeremy, Mike Pender's Searchers and the Merseybeats.
