Georgia Sheriff's Association Releases Statement Opposing Gun Control

Opposition to the gun control proposals being touted at the state and federal levels is mounting. Several of Georgia's elected sheriffs have released statements from their offices stating that new proposals such as military "style" weapons bans and magazine limits infringe on the right to bear arms and would not be enforced in their counties. Yesterday, the Georgia Sheriff's Association, which represents Georgia's 159 elected sheriffs in the General Assembly and hosts training events for sheriffs, released some surprising news. They voted unanimously to adopt a position on the gun debate that is consuming the country's attention.

The entire statement is reproduced below.

The sheriffs took an oath to support the Constitution and will stand by the 2nd Amendment. The sheriffs will aggressively oppose federal or state legislation which infringes upon law abiding citizens’ right to bear arms.

The sheriffs further agree to support any legislation that would effectively penalize criminals who use firearms in the commission of crimes.

The statement has also been posted on the Georgia Sheriff's Association web site, on the home page.

Oddly, the Georgia Sheriff's Association statement has not been picked up by any of the main stream press yet. It seems truly odd that, with the gun debate taking such a position in the forefront of newspaper and television coverage, the Georgia Sheriff's Association stating unanimously and unequivocally that they "will aggressively oppose federal or state legislation which infringes upon law abiding citizens' right to bear arms" does not receive any coverage.

The unanimous statement on the gun debate will not be ignored, however, at the State Capitol, as the Georgia Sheriff's Association is very active and effective in representing the interests of Georgia's elected sheriffs in the General Assembly.
