The announcement of the CMA Awards nominations on September 10, 2013 included George Strait for Entertainer of the Year. Though George Strait has been called the King of Country, and has amassed more than 70 million album sales across 27 albums, the Entertainer of the Year award has been elusive for quite some time.
George Strait won the CMA Entertainer of the Year award in both 1989 and 1990, but in the 23 years since, other artists have moved up the ranks and took over that top spot. In 2012, George Strait announced his farewell tour; the move into semi-retirement would be the end of an era.
The Cowboy Rides Away Tour that began in 2013 will span across 2014 before George Strait puts his tour bus in park and concentrates on recording only. Meanwhile, the tour has seen venues selling out, George Strait breaking attendance records, and contributing to King George being bestowed with Billboard’s top honor, the Legend of Live Award.
Still, it would be a thrill for fans to see George Strait pick up the CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year trophy before he folds the road map and hangs his hat at home. There is tough competition though. George Strait will be up against country’s teddy bear and reigning winner, Blake Shelton; the ACM Entertainer of the Year, Luke Bryan; two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year winner, Taylor Swift, and artist of five Platinum-certified albums, Jason Aldean.
To find if George Strait can make a comeback after 23 years, tune in to the 47th annual CMA Awards on ABC, November 6th.
