Oscar winner George Clooney has been making surprise appearances at bars and restaurants in Vancouver while he has been filming Walt Disney Pictures' "Tomorrowland," according to a CTV report from Sept. 17, 2013.
On Sept. 14, 2013, Clooney shocked employees at sushi restaurant Minami when he showed up under the alias Mr. Sanchez, the name he used to make the reservation at the restaurant.
Minami manager Patrick Rider told CTV: "They asked for a VIP table for a Mr. Sanchez so we made the reservation ...He had some sashimi and a vodka martini. [He] was very, very pleased with everything ... There was some buzz that was created, more amongst the female staff," Rider said. "And obviously, some guests recognized him as well and he was very gracious allowing his picture to be taken."
Rider also said that the restaurant was busy and no tables were available, so Clooney had to be seated at the sushi bar. Even though Clooney had requested a VIP table when he made the reservation, Rider noted that Clooney seemed to be fine with the less private accommodations at the sushi bar.
Clooney also caused a stir with local patrons when he was seen at the Joey Burrard restaurant in Vancouver on Sept. 13, 2013. CTV reports that Clooney has been friendly with people who ask for his autograph and photos.
In July 2013, Clooney and pro wrestler/TV personality Stacy Keibler announced the end of their two-year romance. He has said in many interviews that he does not want to be married or have kids. Clooney has been married once; his four-year marriage to actress Talia Balsam ended in divorce in 1993.
Clooney has been keeping a relatively low profile since the 2013 Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 24, when he, Ben Affleck and Grant Heslov won the prize for Best Picture for producing "Argo." (Clooney also has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the 2005 movie "Syriana.")
On Aug. 28, 2013, Clooney was at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival with Sandra Bullock and filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón to promote their Warner Bros. movie "Gravity." However, Clooney did not attend the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with Bullock and Cuarón for the TIFF premiere of "Gravity," presumably because Clooney was busy working on "Tomorrowland," a movie based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name.
"Gravity" (which is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for Cuarón and Bullock) opens in U.S. and Canadian cinemas on Oct. 4, 2013.
"Tomorrowland" (directed by Brad Bird) opens in U.S and Canadian cinemas on Dec. 12, 2014.
