Genetically engineered salmon could make nature's salmon extinct

Soon the US government may approve the sale of Genetically Engineered (GE) Salmon.   What do you think the Canadian government will do?  If all indications remain the same, Canada will fall in line behind the US and allow the production and sale of GE Salmon and food products containing them.  The Canadian government has already allowed a company to create GE Salmon here in Canada.   They are already here!  If the US government passes the approval to sell GE Salmon for consumption, these GE modified fish will be produced for sale.  These GE Salmon will show up in the market as Salmon (not GE Salmon), and in processed foods, oils and supplements, and you won’t be allowed to know it.

Now the company that has created these GE Salmon, and therefore owns the patent on them, is seeking to grow them in hatcheries on Prince Edward Island (PEI).     PEI is an island province in Canada that has a reputation for its pristine nature and ecology, a province that has one of the best recycling programs, that is known to be a good steward of nature, possibly the greenest province in Canada and it could soon become the province that destroys the natural Salmon species on the planet.   Farfetched you say?  So too does the company responsible for the creation of GE Salmon.   The company has promised to ensure that GE Salmon are only created in hatcheries and never released into the wild.   This has of course been said before of other things that would never be released into the environment. 

Why the GE Salmon will most likely be released into the wild

Some would call this a conspiracy theory but there is very good reason for the GE Salmon to “OOPs” be released into the wild.  Once GE Salmon are released they will spawn with Salmon and the end result will be the spawning of GE Salmon.   Eventually the wild and native Salmon will diminish and become an extinct species.  Eventually only GE Salmon will exist on the planet and these will no longer be Mother Nature’s, but will be a patented species owned by a private corporation.   If we are lucky someone may build hatcheries to save Mother Nature’s natural Salmon.  The result will be that the company that owns the patent on GE Salmon will basically own the market.   Those who fish for Salmon will have to have a licence not only to fish but licences to fish for and sell GE Salmon.     

It’s called eliminating the competition, which is already happening in the agriculture industry with GE foods becoming more prevalent. 

Worldwide threat to wild Salmon and the fishing industry?

Once these GE Salmon start to appear in the wild, not only is the world fishing ecology affected, some would say devastated, but the species once known as Salmon will eventually disappear to become an owned, new manmade species of Salmon.  Survival of the fittest, GE Salmon are genetically modified to be more resistant to disease, genetically modified to be the more fit species.  GE Salmon will mate with wild Salmon, their offspring will be GE Salmon, and therefore owned by the company that owns the patent on them.   Once GE Salmon are released into the wild, there is no stopping it, no reversing the takeover by the GE Salmon.   Yes there are all those promises never to do this right? 

Concerned – take action

In addition to writing your Member of Parliament, you can take a few steps to ensure you are not consuming GMOs.

1. Buying certified organic foods as much as possible, as organic foods by law and definition cannot contain GMOs
2. Look for companies that willingly do not use GMOs in their products, and stores that do not sell GMO products
3. Be informed and boycott products that contain GMOs and let those companies know you will not support their use of GMOs
