The Gear:
The Elkridge is a low-cut, waterproof hiking shoe from Ahnu. The Elkridge employs Ahnu's Numentum technology which works with the foot's natural biomechanics to promote an efficient, stable, and balanced stride. The shoe is comprised of a Nubuck leather upper, leather lined collar and tongue, and rubber toe protector. The shoe is made waterproof by an eVent breathable and waterproof bootie.
The Test:
I've been wearing the Elkridge for multiple purposes and in a variety of conditions for about 5 months. I've given walking tours through downtown Portland, and hiked up to McCall Point and Dog Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge wearing them. As a matter of fact, there was about a month when if I left the house I put these shoes on. That normally doesn't happen when I test hiking shoes or boots. I'll wear them long enough to be able to give a critical analysis, and then put on something a bit more comfortable for daily use. The Elkridge, however, might be the most comfortable hiking shoe I've ever tested. It is as comfortable as a trail running shoe with the sturdiness and durability sought after in a hiking boot. The lacing and leather upper work extremely well together and the sole manages to be supportive without feeling stiff. The shoe remained waterproof in wet conditions and was adequately breathable. I have used the Elkridge as much for walking as I have for hiking and would recommend it for either.
The Bottom Line:
I knew about Ahnu's reputation for human rights and environmental commitment before I tested these shoes, and hoped that the quality of the product would match their high ethical standards. After wearing the Elkridge for several months I can safely say that my hopes were realized. The Elkridge is a sturdy and well balanced hiking shoe that is among the most comfortable I've ever worn.
