The following list depicts some fun facts about Las Vegas for trivia / history buffs and Vegas funatics. Some of the info included here changes daily because no city on earth evolves and sheds it's analogous skin more rapidly than Las Vegas. Thus, consider some of the info here as a vague approximation of reality , which is what Vegas is at least partially about anyway.
- Las Vegas is a Spanish term meaning " The Meadows"

- First hotel - casino opened in Vegas was the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in 1906
- First casino legally licensed was the Northern Club on Fremont Street in 1931 (by Mayme Stocker , a female)
- Mafia member Ben " Bugsy " Siegel built and opened The Flamingo Hotel - Casino utilizing mob funds in 1946. The mob retired (shot and murdered) Bugsy in 1947 for overspending and perhaps skimming mob money while completing the project. He was murdered in his girlfriend's home while reading the LA Times while sitting on the couch.

Two separate links ( here and here ) reported this was legal in the state of Nevada ; I did not peruse the state statute codes to verify it. Perhaps one might consider discussing the situation with the neighbor or calling animal control initially (the local animal control ordinances are in fact very strict about barking dogs as a nuisance ).

Further, visitors are twice as likely to commit suicide in Vegas vs elsewhere. I don't think the local Chamber of Commerce promotes the results of that study, but Vegas has always been known to have among the highest suicide rates nationwide.

I would say the title pretty much tells it all.
Cool facts indeed. I had no idea Las Vegas means "The Meadows." It seems odd considering it's in the desert. LOL!
That is awesome. Very interesting read
You really are an expert on Vegas! Love the interesting facts
Woo-hoo YOU! I love this list. Caesar's 600K ounces of vodka/year seems a little light to me, but I always did think their drinks tasted a bit watered down. ;-) Thanks for sharing these insights to VagueApproximationOfReality-as!
i loved reading this article - thx charles!
What neat and obscure info. This had to have taken a bunch of time. Fun idea for a book. Bet it would sell well on Vegas!
I love these kinds of articles... with obscure and interesting facts! Thanks, Charles.
Very cool article Charles. You really did a lot of research for this. I wonder if you found out how many Charles Higgins' there are in Vegas :) Great job!
Brilliant collection of oddities, and definitely a winner! I so much enjoyed reading this, Charles. Bravo!
Isn't everything about Las Vegas fun, weird and goofy? Is the Golden Gate still there? We used to go there for the shrimp cocktail, a generous portion at a very cheap price, just to get you in the door.
great info
Yes,Pauline..the Golden Gate is still cookin..and so are those 99 - cent shrimp cocktails ..for players club members , anyway. Thanks for the comments..
Cheers
Interesting and entertaining facts. I have spent about 20 minutes in Las Vegas, just long enough to drive through with a stop at McDonalds to use the restroom and grab a burger.
